**Two to three days.** Two full days covers Da Lat properly: one for the town around Xuan Huong Lake, the Crazy House and the night market, and one for the edges, with the old railway to Trai Mat, Linh Phuoc Pagoda, the cable car to Tuyen Lam Lake and a waterfall. A third day adds Lang Biang or the coffee and flower farms. We spent **5 days in Da Lat, from 5 to 10 May 2023**, between Hoi An and Nha Trang. That is two more days than the sights need. Extra days suit a slow pace or act as a rain buffer, but most people will not need them.

## The short answer by trip length

• **1 day:** the lake at dawn, Lam Vien Square, the Chicken Church, the Crazy House and the night market. You miss everything outside town.

• **2 days:** the core, as in our [Da Lat guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/da-lat): the town on day one, the railway, Linh Phuoc and Tuyen Lam Lake on day two.

• **3 days:** add Lang Biang, the 2,167 m peak about 12 km north of town, or the coffee and flower farms around Cau Dat.

• **4 or 5 days:** what we had. Slow mornings, a second night market, waterfalls on a dry morning, and a buffer for rain.

Da Lat is hilly and spread out. Walking between sights eats the day, so plan on Grab or a scooter, and keep every evening free for the market below Da Lat Market, which is the town's real social center.

## Day by day: 3 days in Da Lat

**Day 1, the lake and the town.** Start at **Xuan Huong Lake** early, when mist sits on the water; a full lap takes about an hour on foot. Walk the eastern end to **Lam Vien Square** for the green-glass artichoke dome and the yellow sunflower hall, then ride up to the pink **Da Lat Cathedral** and on to the **Crazy House**, which takes an hour or more if you climb every walkway. Afternoon at Bao Dai's Summer Palace or the villa lanes above the lake. At dusk, go down to the **night market** for banh trang nuong (grilled rice paper) and banh can.

**Day 2, the railway, Linh Phuoc and Tuyen Lam.** The 1930s Art Deco railway station runs a restored train roughly 7 km to **Trai Mat**, about half an hour each way. Departures depend on passenger numbers and can be cancelled in bad weather, so check at the station the day before. From Trai Mat walk to **Linh Phuoc Pagoda** and its mosaic dragon. After lunch, take the **Robin Hill cable car** over the pine forest to **Truc Lam Zen Monastery** and walk down to **Tuyen Lam Lake**. **Datanla Falls**, with its alpine coaster, is a short ride further on.

**Day 3, Lang Biang or the farms.** Climb or take a jeep up Lang Biang for the view across the plateau, or spend the morning at the coffee and flower farms around Cau Dat. In the rainy season, do this in the morning; the rain usually arrives in the afternoon.

## Getting there and where Da Lat fits in a route

There is no railway to Da Lat. From **Ho Chi Minh City** (about 300 km) sleeper buses take roughly 6.5 to 9 hours depending on the operator, while flights to Lien Khuong airport take about 50 to 60 minutes, plus the drive into town. From **Hoi An or Da Nang**, a direct flight from Da Nang takes about an hour. **Nha Trang** is about 3 to 4 hours by bus or limousine van over the Khanh Le pass; travel by day, since fog and landslides are possible in the rainy season.

On our route, Da Lat came after **Hoi An (6 days)** and before **Nha Trang (3 days)** and **Ho Chi Minh City**. It works well as the cool break between the central coast and the south. Our [4-week Vietnam itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-itinerary-our-4-week-route-north-to-south) has every leg, [how many days in Hoi An](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-hoi-an) covers the stop before, and [Nha Trang: is it worth the stop](https://clevertourists.com/resources/nha-trang-things-to-do-worth-visiting-guide) covers the one after. ## When to go

At about 1,500 m, Da Lat stays mild all year, with daytime highs mostly in the low to mid 20s°C and nights near 15°C or lower. The choice is dry versus wet.

• **December to March:** the dry season and the easiest weather. Cherry blossoms usually bloom from late January into February, but **Tet** brings Vietnamese families to town in large numbers, so book ahead if your dates overlap. See [Vietnam in December, January and February](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-in-january-weather-by-region-where-to-go) and [Tet 2027](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tet-2027-vietnam-dates-holiday-closures-travel-guide).

• **April:** still mostly dry, the warmest month, and quieter after Tet.

• **May to November:** the rainy season, with clear mornings and afternoon downpours; October is often the wettest month. Our 5 to 10 May stay fell at its start. Hotels discount and the waterfalls run full, so a third day is worth more in this season as a rain buffer.

## Common mistakes

• **Packing only for the beach.** Nights are cold by Vietnamese standards; the wool-hat stalls at the night market exist for a reason.

• **Walking between sights.** The center is on hills and the attractions are kilometers apart. Use Grab or rent a scooter if you are licensed to ride one.

• **Building a day around the train.** It may not run if too few passengers turn up. Have Linh Phuoc as a Grab ride in reserve.

• **Waterfalls in the afternoon in the wet season.** Go in the morning before the rain.

• **Arriving at Tet without a booking.** Prices rise and rooms go early.
