Ninh Binh is about **90 km south of Hanoi by road**, and the trip takes **about 2 hours 15 minutes by train** or **roughly 2 hours by limousine van**, more by public bus in heavy traffic. All three work, and so do day tours. We did not day-trip: we stayed **4 nights in Ninh Binh** (23 to 27 April 2023) after Hanoi, and for most people at least one night there is worth it, because the Trang An boats are best early, before the Hanoi tour groups arrive. Below are the options with times and what to expect.

## By train: about 2 hours 15 minutes

Ninh Binh is a stop on the Reunification Express, the main north-south line, about **115 km by rail** from Hanoi's main station on Le Duan Street. Southbound trains take about **2 hours 15 minutes**. In the timetables published by The Man in Seat 61, the two daytime departures that suit a visit are the **SE7 at 06:00, arriving 08:17**, and the **SE5 at 08:55, arriving 11:11**. Northbound, the **SE8 leaves Ninh Binh at 13:41** (Hanoi 16:10) and the **SE6 at 16:51** (Hanoi 19:12).

Timetables change, so check the current times and book on the official Vietnam Railways site, dsvn.vn, or a reseller. Fares for this short hop are low, but booking sites quote quite different figures, so compare the price for your seat class on dsvn.vn. Our [Vietnam train guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-train-travel-reunification-express-sleeper-guide) explains seat and berth classes.

Ninh Binh station is in the city, roughly **5 to 6 km from Tam Coc**, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or Grab. Travelling on south afterwards, the overnight train from Ninh Binh to Hue saves going back to Hanoi.

## By limousine van, bus or private car

• **Limousine van:** the most common option. These are 9- to 11-seat minivans that usually collect from Old Quarter hotels and drop at your Tam Coc or Ninh Binh hotel. The drive itself is about 2 hours on the expressway; pick-ups add time. Booking sites list fares of roughly $5 to $9 a seat.

• **Public bus:** buses leave from **Giap Bat** bus station, about 7 km south-west of the Old Quarter, and take about 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic and stops. It is the cheapest option, but you need to get to Giap Bat first and from the Ninh Binh bus station to Tam Coc after. Leave early to avoid the traffic getting out of Hanoi.

• **Private car:** about 1.5 to 2 hours door to door, and the only option that lets you stop where you like on the way. It is the sensible choice for families or groups.

## Day trip or overnight?

A **day trip** works if you are short of time. Group tours from Hanoi usually combine a boat ride at Trang An or Tam Coc with Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital, and often the Hang Mua viewpoint, leaving in the morning and returning in the evening. The catch is timing: you arrive at the same hour as every other Hanoi tour, and the boat route is busiest from late morning.

By train, a do-it-yourself day trip is the SE7 at 06:00, a morning on the Trang An boats and Hoa Lu, and the SE6 back at 16:51. It is a long day, but you are on the water before the tour buses.

An **overnight** is the better trip. Staying around Tam Coc means you can be at the Trang An wharf near opening time, cycle to Bich Dong and through the rice fields, and decide on Hang Mua based on the weather. We gave Ninh Binh **4 days**, which left room for Trang An, Hoa Lu, Bich Dong and the rural roads around Tam Coc without rushing; two nights covers the core, as laid out in our [2 days in Ninh Binh](https://clevertourists.com/guides/2-days-in-ninh-binh) itinerary.

## What to see and what it costs

• **Trang An:** the UNESCO-listed boat route through flooded valleys and low caves, rowed by local boatmen, with several routes to choose from at the wharf. Recent sources put the ticket at about **250,000 VND per adult including the boat**, but we found no official 2026 price notice, so check at the ticket office.

• **Tam Coc:** an open river route through rice fields and three caves, best when the rice is in season. One boat ride, Trang An or Tam Coc, is enough for most visitors.

• **Hoa Lu, Bich Dong and Hang Mua:** the temples of Vietnam's early capital, a pagoda built into a limestone hillside, and the stair climb to the famous river-and-karst view, worth it only on a clear day.

Bring cash for smaller places and parking outside Tam Coc. Our [Vietnam tipping guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-etiquette-vietnam) covers what to give boat rowers, guides and drivers.
