**Yes, as a 2-day, 1-night cruise outside the summer storm season; usually not as a day trip.** The bay is about 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Hanoi each way, so a day trip spends more time in a van than on the water. An overnight cruise gets you the karsts at sunset and sunrise, a kayak or cave stop, and a calmer area away from the day boats. Operator price lists put 2-day, 1-night cruises at roughly **$105 to $150 per person** at the budget end, **$145 to $250** for a comfortable mid-range boat and **$300 or more** for the top tier, sharing a cabin. If your budget or time is tight, **Ninh Binh** gives you the same limestone scenery by rowing boat for far less, and it is on the way south.

## Day trip vs overnight vs two nights

• **Day trip:** roughly 5 to 6 hours on the road for about 4 hours on the water, on the busiest routes with the most boats. Worth it only if you have one spare day and will not get another chance.

• **2 days, 1 night:** the standard and the best value. Board around midday, cruise, kayak, sunset, sleep on the bay, and return the next lunchtime.

• **3 days, 2 nights:** reaches further areas and slows down. Worth it for people who want a rest, less so on a tight two-week Vietnam trip.

On a [2-week Hanoi to Saigon itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-itinerary-2-weeks-hanoi-to-saigon), one night on the bay plus 3 nights in Hanoi and 2 in Ninh Binh is a sensible split.

## Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay

"Halong Bay cruise" covers three neighbouring areas:

• **Ha Long Bay proper:** the UNESCO-listed core, boarding at Tuan Chau or Ha Long. The famous sights such as Sung Sot Cave, and the most boats.

• **Lan Ha Bay:** south of Ha Long, near Cat Ba Island, reached via Hai Phong or Cat Ba. Fewer boats, beaches and good kayaking. Many mid-range cruises now run here.

• **Bai Tu Long Bay:** north-east of Ha Long, quieter still, with similar karst scenery and fewer stops.

For a first cruise, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long usually gives the better experience; Ha Long proper suits people who want the classic caves. Check the route on the itinerary before booking, since some "Halong" cruises only spend part of the trip in Ha Long Bay itself.

## What you get for the money

Most 2-day, 1-night packages include the Hanoi shuttle (sometimes an extra charge), a private cabin, meals, a kayak or bamboo boat stop, a cave or island visit, and the bay entrance fee. Entrance fees differ by route and length of stay and are usually built into the cruise price; confirm it in writing.

**What costs extra:** drinks (often priced well above shore prices), some excursions, the limousine van upgrade, and tips. Our [Vietnam tipping guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-etiquette-vietnam) covers what is normal for crew and guides.

**Budget boats** (around $105 to $150) are fine for sleeping and the scenery is the same; you get simpler cabins, more people on the boat and busier routes. **Mid-range** ($145 to $250) is where most travellers are happiest. Above $300 you pay for suites, balconies and service. The price you see is per person sharing; solo travellers pay a single supplement on most boats.

## Storm season and cancellations

Cruises are stopped by the authorities when a storm approaches. In recent years every boat has been held in port during Typhoon Yagi in September 2024 and Typhoon Wipha in July 2025, and operators cancelled and refunded or rebooked. The risk is highest from about **June to September**. A confirmed booking does not guarantee the boat will sail; the decision rests with local authorities on the day.

• **Book with a cancellation policy** that refunds or rebooks for weather, and keep a spare day in Hanoi if you can.

• **Winter (December to February)** brings fog and cool, grey days. The boats run, but views can be flat.

• **Best months:** March to May and September to November, per our [best time to visit Hanoi and Halong Bay](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-hanoi) guide. Avoid Vietnamese holiday weekends such as 30 April and 2 September, when boats fill and prices rise.

## The Ninh Binh alternative

We were in Hanoi in April 2023 and went on to Ninh Binh for 4 days rather than to the bay. Ninh Binh is about 2 hours south of Hanoi by train or van, and its limestone karsts rise from rice fields and rivers instead of the sea. Boat trips through Trang An's caves or along Tam Coc are rowed by local boat crews and cost a fraction of a cruise.

**Choose Ninh Binh if:** you are on a tight budget, travelling in storm season, short of time, or heading south anyway. **Choose the bay if:** you want a night on the water and the sea views, and you have 2 days to give it. With enough time, do both. See our [Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/hanoi-to-ninh-binh-train-bus-day-trip-guide), [2 days in Ninh Binh](https://clevertourists.com/guides/2-days-in-ninh-binh) and [day trips from Hanoi](https://clevertourists.com/resources/day-trips-from-hanoi).

## Who should go, and who should skip it

**Worth it for:** first-time visitors to northern Vietnam with 2 spare days between October and May; couples or families who want an easy, organised night away; anyone who wants to kayak among the karsts.

**Skip or swap for Ninh Binh if:** you only have a single day, you are travelling in peak typhoon months with no flexibility, you get seasick easily, or your budget is under about $100 for the experience. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is a Halong Bay day trip worth it?

Usually not. The bay is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Hanoi each way, so a day trip spends most of its time on the road. A 2-day, 1-night cruise is the better value.

### How much does a Halong Bay cruise cost?

Operator price lists put 2-day, 1-night cruises at roughly $105 to $150 per person at the budget end, $145 to $250 for mid-range boats and $300 or more for the top tier, sharing a cabin.

### Is Lan Ha Bay better than Halong Bay?

For many first cruises, yes. Lan Ha Bay near Cat Ba has fewer boats and good kayaking, while Ha Long Bay proper has the classic caves and the most traffic.

### When are Halong Bay cruises cancelled?

When the authorities halt boats ahead of a storm, most often from June to September. Typhoons Yagi in 2024 and Wipha in 2025 both stopped all cruises.

### Is Ninh Binh a good alternative to Halong Bay?

Yes. It is about 2 hours from Hanoi, has similar limestone scenery seen by rowing boat, costs far less and is on the way south.
