**The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul) is a competition of roughly 20-foot electric lanterns held in mid-December in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, about two hours north of Manila by bus. The 2026 date had not been announced when we checked in late October; in 2025 the competition was on Saturday 13 December at Robinsons Starmills, and the lanterns were then lit every evening from 18:00 until 1 January.** If you cannot get to the competition night, the exhibition nights are the easier way to see them. We spent 2 days in Manila in November 2022 and have not been to San Fernando, so this guide uses the city government, Robinsons Malls and local press rather than our own visit.

## Giant Lantern Festival 2026: date and venue

The City of San Fernando and its Tourism Office announce each year's date in the weeks before; no 2026 date or theme was published by late October 2026. The festival is always held in mid-December, usually on a Saturday. Recent competition dates were 14 December 2019, 17 December 2022, 16 December 2023, 14 December 2024 and **13 December 2025**.

**Venue:** the competition has been held at **Robinsons Starmills Pampanga**, a mall in San Fernando, since 2008; Robinsons Malls calls it the festival's home for 17 years. Earlier venues included SM City Pampanga (2000 to 2007) and Paskuhan Village in the 1990s.

**What the 2025 edition looked like:** SunStar Pampanga reported that ten barangays (city districts) competed: Bulaon, Calulut, Del Pilar, Del Rosario, Dolores, San Jose, San Juan, San Nicolas, Santa Lucia and Santo Niño. Robinsons Malls reported that Barangay Bulaon was Grand Champion. The 2024 champion was San Nicolas. The city deployed around 400 safety, medical and fire personnel for the night.

Plan for the second or third Saturday of December 2026 and watch the City of San Fernando's official pages from mid-November. We will update this page when the date is out.

## What the lanterns are

The *parol* is the Filipino Christmas lantern, usually a star, hung in windows and along streets from September onwards. San Fernando's versions are something else: steel-framed lanterns about **20 feet across**, each lit with thousands of bulbs (3,500 to 5,000 is typical, and a 10,000-bulb cap was set in 2017).

Their patterns are driven by **rotors**, large steel drums with pins that switch circuits on and off as they turn, so the lights ripple and pulse in time with music. Each barangay's team builds its rotor by hand, and the craft is passed down through families. The city launched its first all-LED rotor-operated lantern in 2024.

The festival grew from a religious procession called *lubenas* held during the nine-day Christmas novena, the same period as [Simbang Gabi](https://clevertourists.com/resources/simbang-gabi-2026-philippines-misa-de-gallo-guide). Electric lanterns arrived in the 1930s. The 2025 edition was billed as the 117th Giant Lantern Festival.

## Competition night versus exhibition nights

**Competition night** is the main event: each lantern performs its light show to music in turn, then the judges announce the winner. It is crowded, it runs late, and arriving by mid-afternoon is how locals get a decent spot.

**Exhibition nights** follow straight after. In 2025, Robinsons Malls published this schedule:

• **14 to 23 December:** lanterns light up daily from 18:00 at Robinsons Starmills.

• **24 December:** lanterns light up at 21:00 between San Fernando City Hall and the Metropolitan Cathedral, timed for Christmas Eve Mass.

• **25 to 30 December:** back at Robinsons Starmills from 18:00.

• **1 January 2026:** grand finale at 18:00.

SunStar also reported extra 2025 displays at Capital Town Pampanga, City Town Center in Calulut and MarQuee Mall. Exhibition nights are less crowded and you can get much closer to the lanterns. If your dates are flexible, a weeknight between 15 and 22 December is the comfortable choice.

## Tickets and entry

Neither the city nor Robinsons Malls published ticket prices for the 2025 competition or the exhibition nights, and the 2025 announcements we found did not mention a fee. Exhibition viewing at the mall is in the open grounds. On competition night, seating near the stage has historically gone to sponsors and invited guests rather than being sold; everyone else stands.

The festival also draws plenty of attention abroad: the city has shipped lanterns to Los Angeles, and local press reported plans for a lantern lighting in Las Vegas in 2026. If you see "Giant Lantern Festival tickets" sold online, check that it is the San Fernando event and not an overseas display or an unrelated lantern show.

We could not confirm 2026 entry arrangements, so check the City of San Fernando Tourism Office or Robinsons Starmills Pampanga pages before you go.

## Getting there from Manila

San Fernando is the capital of Pampanga province, north of Manila along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX).

• **Bus:** Victory Liner runs from its Cubao terminal in Quezon City to San Fernando; Rome2Rio lists the trip at about 2 hours, with departures roughly hourly and fares around ₱130 to ₱210 (≈ $2.0–3.3). Check the current timetable on Victory Liner's site. From the San Fernando drop-off, a tricycle or ride-hailing car gets you to Robinsons Starmills.

• **Car or ride-hailing:** the fastest option outside rush hour. Mid-December traffic out of Manila on a Saturday afternoon is heavy, and leaving after the show means queuing with everyone else.

• **Fly into Clark instead:** Clark International Airport is also in Pampanga, so if you are arriving from abroad specifically for the festival, flying into Clark avoids Manila traffic altogether.

• **Stay the night:** returning to Manila after a late competition night is tiring, so consider a hotel in San Fernando or nearby Angeles City and book as soon as the date is announced.

Combine the trip with Pampanga's food, which has a strong reputation within the Philippines; our [Philippines food guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/food-philippines) has the dishes to look for.

## Fitting it into a December trip

The festival sits neatly at the start of the Christmas run: competition in mid-December, Simbang Gabi from 16 December, Christmas, and then Sinulog in Cebu and Ati-Atihan in Kalibo in January (see our [Sinulog and Ati-Atihan 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sinulog-ati-atihan-2027-cebu-kalibo-dates)). December is also the start of the dry season in much of the country; month-by-month detail is in [best time to visit the Philippines](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-philippines).

If you like lantern festivals, northern Thailand's Yi Peng is a month earlier; our [Yi Peng and Loy Krathong guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/yi-peng-loy-krathong-2026-chiang-mai-dates-lantern-guide) has the 2026 dates.
