**Diocletian's Palace** is **free to enter**. It is not a museum: it is the inhabited centre of Split, and you walk in through the Golden, Silver, Iron or Brass gates without a ticket. What costs money are the monuments inside it — the **Cathedral of St Domnius** at about **€7 (≈ $7.8)**, the **bell tower** at about **€7 (≈ $7.8)**, the **Temple of Jupiter** at about **€3 (≈ $3.3)** and the **subterranean cellars** at about **€6 (≈ $6.7)**. Combined tickets run **€10 to €18 (≈ $11.1–20)** from the Peristyle ticket office.

## What is free, and it is most of it

This is the thing that confuses visitors: the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is also where people live, shop and drink coffee. There is no gate, no turnstile and no opening hours.

Free to walk: all four Roman gates, the **Peristyle** courtyard, the **Vestibule**, the main corridor of the subterranean cellars, the narrow streets of the former imperial apartments, and the Riva waterfront outside the walls.

That free route is the best two hours in Split. Enter from the Riva through the Bronze Gate into the cellars, come up into the Peristyle, and take any of the alleys off it — the palace is a grid of Roman walls with a medieval city built inside it, and getting slightly lost is the point.

## What the tickets actually buy

Individual prices, roughly:

• **Cathedral of St Domnius** (the former mausoleum of Diocletian): about €7 (≈ $7.8)

• **Bell tower climb:** about €7 (≈ $7.8), 183 steps

• **Temple of Jupiter** (now a baptistery): about €3 (≈ $3.3)

• **Subterranean cellars, full route:** about €6 (≈ $6.7)

Combined tickets are sold at the Peristyle ticket office and are colour-coded: cathedral plus bell tower around **€10 to €12 (≈ $11.1–13.4)**, and a comprehensive bundle including the crypt, treasury and Temple of Jupiter around **€14 to €18 (≈ $15.6–20)**. The bundle is better value if you intend to do three or more.

The **bell tower** is the one to think about. The climb is 183 steps on open-air medieval stairs with steep sections, and it is genuinely not suitable for anyone with vertigo or mobility problems. The view over the palace roofs and the harbour is the reward, and it is worth the discomfort for most people.

## Timing the visit around the crowds

Split is a cruise port, and the palace is where everyone goes. The Peristyle, which is a small courtyard, is the pinch point — when two ships are in, it is standing room only.

The fix is simple: go early or late. Before 09:00 the palace belongs to residents and the cafés are setting up. After 18:00 the day-trippers are back on board and the light on the stone is better anyway.

We spent two nights in Split in August 2023, moving down the coast from Šibenik to Dubrovnik. Two nights is the minimum that lets you see the palace at both ends of the day, which is where the city works.

## Split as a base

Split is the transport hub for the Dalmatian islands — ferries and catamarans leave for Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula from the port immediately beside the palace. That proximity is the reason to base here rather than in Dubrovnik.

The bus station and the ferry terminal are next to each other, about a five-minute walk from the palace walls, which makes Split unusually practical for a coastal itinerary.

Do not miss the **Riva** in the evening — the wide waterfront promenade is where the whole city walks — and the **Marjan** hill to the west, a wooded park with beaches and views back over the harbour. Both are free.
