**Derinkuyu Underground City** costs **€13 (≈ $14.5)** for international visitors, or is covered by the **Museum Pass Cappadocia**. It opens **08:00 to 18:00 or 19:00 from April to October** and **08:00 to 17:00 from November to March**, with last entry 45 to 60 minutes before closing. It reaches roughly **85 metres** below ground across multiple levels, though only about **10%** is open to visitors. The tunnels are narrow and low — this is not a place for anyone who struggles in enclosed spaces.

## What you pay and how you get in

The adult foreign-visitor ticket is **€13 (≈ $14.5)**, charged in lira at the daily rate. The **Museum Pass Cappadocia** covers it, which is worth doing the arithmetic on if you are also visiting Göreme Open Air Museum, the Zelve valley and Pasabag. The standard *Müzekart* sold to Turkish citizens and residents does not apply to foreign visitors.

Tickets are bought at the site. There is no need for an advance booking, and no timed entry — which is exactly why the site becomes a bottleneck when a coach convoy arrives. Go early or late.

Children enter free or at a reduced rate depending on age; carry a passport or ID if you are claiming it.

## What it is actually like inside

Derinkuyu is the deepest of the excavated Cappadocian underground cities: a multi-level network cut into soft volcanic tuff, used as a refuge during raids and invasions. What you walk through is the upper portion — stables, cellars, storage rooms, a missionary school, churches, and the famous round stone doors that could be rolled across passages from inside.

The route descends through **stepped tunnels that are genuinely narrow and low**. In several places you are bent over, single file, with people behind you. There are handrails and lighting, but no alternative exit from the middle of the route.

The honest advice: if you are severely claustrophobic or have back, knee or mobility problems, skip it. This is not a warning added for caution's sake — the passages are tight enough that turning around is difficult, and the ventilation, while functional, is not generous.

Wear shoes with grip. The rock-cut steps are worn smooth and become slippery with the moisture from everyone's breath and shoes.

## Getting there from Göreme

Derinkuyu is about **30 km south of Göreme**, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road, on the road toward Niğde. We based ourselves in Göreme for five nights in late October 2023 and did it as part of a day that also took in the Ihlara valley.

There is no convenient public transport for a tight visit. Options: a rental car, a taxi negotiated for the round trip with waiting, or the green/red tour routes that include Derinkuyu as a stop. The tours are efficient but rushed, and you will share the tunnels with your entire coach.

If you are driving, parking is at the site entrance. The town of Derinkuyu itself is small and unremarkable; there is nothing else to do there, so this is a single-purpose stop.

## Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı?

The other major underground city in the region, **Kaymaklı**, is closer to Göreme and has wider, more comfortable passages. Derinkuyu is deeper and more dramatic.

The practical difference: Kaymaklı is easier to move through and better for anyone nervous about tight spaces; Derinkuyu is the more impressive engineering and the one to choose if you are comfortable underground. Doing both is unnecessary unless you are genuinely interested in the archaeology — they are the same kind of site.

Whichever you pick, the visit takes **45 minutes to an hour**. It is a stop on a day, not a day in itself.
