**Krujë, Durrës and Mount Dajti are the three best day trips from Tirana: each is under about an hour away and needs no car.** Krujë has Skanderbeg's castle and an old bazaar on a mountainside, Durrës has a Roman amphitheatre and the sea, and the Dajti cable car lifts you above the city in about 15 minutes. Berat and Shkodër are each about 2 hours away; both work as long day trips, but both are better with a night. We spent 9 days in Tirana across two stays in 2023, four in September between Theth and Korçë and five in October at the end of a month in Albania, so we know it as a base as well as a capital.

## Day trips from Tirana at a glance

Ranked by payoff against travel time:

• **Krujë:** about 1 hour by bus. Half a day to a full day.

• **Durrës:** about 35 to 45 minutes by bus. Half a day, or a full day with the beach.

• **Mount Dajti:** about 15 minutes up by cable car from the city's eastern edge. Half a day.

• **Berat:** about 2 hours by bus. A long day; better overnight.

• **Shkodër:** about 2 hours by bus. A long day; better as the first stop on the way to Theth.

Albania has no passenger trains in 2026. The rebuilt Tirana to Durrës line is targeted for 2027, so every day trip below is by bus, *furgon* minibus, taxi or rental car. Buses for the north and south leave from Tirana's main terminals outside the center; our [Tirana airport guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tirana-airport-to-city-center-bus-taxi-guide) explains the LUNA bus that links them.

## 1. Krujë: Skanderbeg's castle and the old bazaar

**What it is:** a hill town on the slopes north of Tirana where Skanderbeg held off Ottoman sieges in the 15th century. The castle grounds hold the Skanderbeg Museum and an Ethnographic Museum in an Ottoman-era house, and the cobbled bazaar below the gate sells carpets, felt, copper and antiques.

**Getting there:** buses from Tirana take about an hour for the roughly 44 km and cost a few hundred lek, with departures through the day until early evening. Make sure your bus goes to Krujë itself and not only to Fushë-Krujë on the plain below.

**How long:** 3 to 4 hours on site. **Who it suits:** a first day trip, history and the views back over the coastal plain. **Tip:** museum hours change by season and some listings show them closed on Mondays, so check before you go on a Monday.

## 2. Durrës: Roman ruins and the nearest beach

**What it is:** Albania's main port and one of its oldest cities, about 35 km west. Its Roman amphitheatre, one of the largest in the Balkans, sits in the middle of town with houses built over part of it, a short walk from the Venetian tower and the seafront promenade.

**Getting there:** buses run very frequently, roughly every few minutes to half an hour from early morning into the evening, take about 35 to 45 minutes and cost a few hundred lek at most, in cash. Allow extra time to reach the terminal from central Tirana.

**How long:** 2 to 3 hours for the amphitheatre, the archaeological museum and the promenade; a full day if you swim. **Who it suits:** an easy half day, and anyone who wants the sea without going south. **Tip:** the beaches south of the city are long and built up; Durrës is about the old town and ruins, so treat the beach as a bonus, not the reason.

## 3. Mount Dajti and the cable car

**What it is:** the mountain that fills the view east of Tirana, part of Dajti National Park. The Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs about 5 km in roughly 15 minutes to an upper station with walking trails, restaurants and the widest view over the city and the plain.

**Getting there:** city bus or a short taxi ride to the lower station on the eastern edge of town. Bunk'Art 1, Enver Hoxha's five-level Cold War bunker described in our [Albania guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/albania), is close to the base, so the two make one half day.

**How long:** half a day with Bunk'Art. **Who it suits:** a short trip, a clear afternoon or a last day before a flight. **Tip:** the cable car has a weekly closing day and stops in strong wind, so check before you cross the city, and go on a clear day; in haze the view is the point and it disappears.

## 4. Berat: the city of a thousand windows

**What it is:** a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town of white houses climbing a hill below an inhabited castle, about 120 km south. Our [Berat guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/berat-city-of-a-thousand-windows-guide) covers the castle quarter, the Mangalem and Gorica districts and the Onufri icons.

**Getting there:** buses take about 2 hours, with frequent departures in the morning and fewer in the afternoon. Berat's bus station is outside the old town, so budget for a taxi or local bus in.

**How long:** a full day at least. **Who it suits:** people with only one base in Albania. **Tip:** go overnight if you can. We spent 3 nights in Berat before our second Tirana stay, and the hillsides are at their best when the windows light up at dusk, after the last day-trip buses have gone.

## 5. Shkodër: Rozafa Castle and the lake

**What it is:** northern Albania's main city, below Rozafa Castle at the meeting of three rivers and on the shore of Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans. The Shkodër section of our [Albania guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/albania) has the castle's history and its legend.

**Getting there:** buses take about 2 hours, with departures roughly every half hour from early morning to early evening, with the fare paid in cash.

**How long:** a full day for the castle, the old town and the lake shore. **Who it suits:** travelers who are not going on to the mountains. **Tip:** if Theth is on your list, do not do Shkodër as a day trip; stay there instead. We spent 2 nights in Shkodër and 3 in [Theth](https://clevertourists.com/guides/theth) before arriving in Tirana, and the morning furgons to Theth leave Shkodër around 7:00 to 7:30am. See [how many days in Shkodër](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-shkoder) and [how to get to Theth](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-to-get-to-theth-albania-road-conditions-and-furgons).

## Planning tips for day trips from Tirana

**Buses and furgons:** timetables are loose and some minibuses leave when full. Go early, carry small lek notes, and confirm the return time with the driver; the last buses back are often in the late afternoon or early evening.

**Car or not:** Krujë, Durrës and Dajti need no car. A car makes Berat or Shkodër easier as day trips, but Albanian roads are demanding and unlit at night, so avoid driving back in the dark; our [Albania safety guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-albania-safe-to-visit-tourist-guide) covers roads in more detail.

**Cash:** many buses, museums and small restaurants are cash only. See [Albania cash and ATMs](https://clevertourists.com/resources/albania-cash-culture-atms-and-tipping-rules) and [tipping in Albania](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-albania-cash-lek-restaurant-etiquette-guide).

**Where it fits:** Tirana is the natural start and end of an Albania trip because of the airport, which is why we came back to it. Our [2-week Albania itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/albania-itinerary-2-weeks-theth-tirana-riviera-berat) shows how to turn Berat and Shkodër from day trips into proper stops.
