**Take a limousine van or a day bus: about 3.5 to 4 hours down the Khanh Le Pass for roughly 200,000 to 260,000 VND ($8 to $11) a seat, with departures from about 5am to late afternoon.** A private car is faster, around 2.5 to 3 hours, and costs several times more. There is no train and no useful flight between the two. The one real risk is the pass itself: in the October to December rains it is prone to landslides, and in November 2025 a slide on Khanh Le hit a passenger bus and killed six people. We were in Da Lat for 5 days in early May 2023 and went on to Nha Trang for 3 nights before Ho Chi Minh City.

## The route: Highway 27C and the Khanh Le Pass

The direct road is **National Highway 27C**, roughly 130 to 140 km, which climbs from Nha Trang's coast to Da Lat's plateau at about 1,500 m. The heart of it is the **Khanh Le Pass**, about 33 km of hairpins along steep forested slopes. It is the main reason the trip is short, and the main reason it is closed some years.

When 27C is shut, buses detour via **Highway 27B** or the longer route through Phan Rang, adding an hour or more. Vietnamese news reports record closures after heavy rain in 2017, 2020 and 2025; the 2025 closure lasted over a month before the pass reopened in late December.

## Option 1: limousine vans (best for most people)

Nine-seat **limousine vans** are the most popular choice. Aggregator listings in 2026 put seats at roughly **$8 to $11**, journey times at **3 to 4 hours**, and many vans pick up from hotels or company offices in central Da Lat and drop off along Nha Trang's beach strip, which saves a taxi at each end.

Book through your hotel, the operator's own office, or aggregators such as 12Go or Baolau, which list several van companies side by side. A day ahead is fine most of the year; for weekends and Vietnamese holidays, book two or three days out. Vans have limited luggage space, so tell the company if you have two big cases.

## Option 2: FUTA (Phuong Trang) and other big buses

**FUTA Bus Lines (Phuong Trang)** and other coach companies run sleeper and seat buses on the route, with fares listed at around **200,000 to 250,000 VND (≈ $7.8–9.7)** on booking sites and the first bus around 5am and last in the late afternoon according to redBus listings. Check the FUTA site or app for current times.

• **Departure point:** Da Lat's **inter-provincial bus station (Ben xe lien tinh Da Lat)**, a short Grab ride from Xuan Huong Lake; check whether your operator offers a pickup shuttle.

• **Arrival point:** Nha Trang's bus stations or the operator's office, then a Grab to your hotel. Check the drop-off on your ticket, because some services stop outside the centre.

Big buses have proper luggage holds and are steadier on the bends than a light van, which matters if you get carsick.

## Option 3: private car

A private car with driver takes roughly **2.5 to 3 hours** and lets you stop at viewpoints on the pass. Aggregator quotes vary from about $40 to well over $100 depending on vehicle size, so compare your hotel's quote with transfer sites. For three or four people the gap to van tickets shrinks a lot, and you leave when you want.

Riding the pass yourself by motorbike is popular with experienced riders, but it is a steep, wet mountain road with buses on it; do not attempt it as a first motorbike trip, and never during heavy rain.

## No train, no direct flight

The old Da Lat railway was cut decades ago; only a short tourist line to Trai Mat survives. The main north to south line passes through Nha Trang, not Da Lat, as our [Vietnam train guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-train-travel-reunification-express-sleeper-guide) explains.

Da Lat (Lien Khuong) and Nha Trang (Cam Ranh) both have airports, but there is no practical flight between them; by the time you add two airport transfers the road is faster anyway.

## Safety and the rainy season

The October to December rains on this stretch of the central coast are the serious risk. In **November 2025** a landslide on the Khanh Le Pass buried a Phuong Trang bus, killing six people and injuring many more, and the pass stayed closed for weeks. In those months, check Vietnamese news or ask your hotel the day before, travel in daylight, and accept a detour or an extra day rather than pushing through a storm.

From January to August the road is generally open and the main hazard is the bends; carsick-prone travellers should sit near the front and take medication before leaving.

## Fitting it into a route

Most north to south trips come into Da Lat from Hoi An (see [Hoi An to Da Lat](https://clevertourists.com/resources/hoi-an-to-da-lat-sleeper-bus-flight-guide)) and then go down to the coast, as on our [4-week Vietnam route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/vietnam-itinerary-our-4-week-route-north-to-south). Plan Da Lat with our [Da Lat guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/da-lat) and [how many days in Da Lat](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-da-lat), and see whether Nha Trang deserves the stop in [Nha Trang: things to do and is it worth it](https://clevertourists.com/resources/nha-trang-things-to-do-worth-visiting-guide).

From Nha Trang, the train south or a short flight from Cam Ranh gets you to Saigon, and from there the delta is a bus ride away: see [Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho](https://clevertourists.com/resources/ho-chi-minh-city-to-can-tho-mekong-delta-bus-guide).
