**Madrid's Plaza Mayor Christmas market runs from late November to 31 December 2026, according to the city's tourism site esMadrid, which had not published the exact opening day when we checked. Barcelona's Fira de Santa Llúcia organiser had also not published 2026 dates; the 2025 fair ran 28 November to 23 December. The Three Kings parades are on the evening of Tuesday 5 January 2027, and Wednesday 6 January is a national holiday.** Spain's Christmas lasts longer than most of Europe's, so the 2 to 6 January stretch is a real part of the season. We were in Madrid from late June 2022 and Barcelona in late July 2022, so everything below comes from official and organiser sources.

## Madrid: market dates and what's on

The city's full Christmas programme for 2026-27 will be published in late November, says esMadrid. These dates were already listed:

• **Plaza Mayor Christmas market:** late November to 31 December 2026, with free entry. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to 21:00, and Friday, Saturday and the eve of holidays 10:00 to 22:00. Last year it opened on 27 November. It has 104 stalls, mostly nativity figures, decorations, and joke items and costumes rather than food, so don't come expecting a German-style market.

• **Christmas lights:** 21 November to 6 January. esMadrid says exact hours are still to be confirmed. Its provisional schedule is Sunday to Thursday 18:00 to 00:00, Friday and Saturday to 01:00, and longer on 7 and 24 December, 31 December and 5 January. A local blog said on 18 October that the switch-on date was not yet final, so check before planning around the first night.

• **Feria de Artesanía:** 1 to 30 December on Paseo de Recoletos, between Colón and Cibeles, daily 11:00 to 21:00, 24 December 11:00 to 15:00, closed 25 December. Free entry, about 130 craft workshops. This is the better choice for gifts.

• **Christmas Lottery draw:** 22 December at the Teatro Real. esMadrid says the public can attend free, with doors opening at 08:00 on a first-come basis.

• **Cortylandia:** the animated show on the front of El Corte Inglés between Preciados and Callao, November to January.

• **Puerta del Sol:** the twelve grapes at midnight on 31 December, with the practice run, the *Preuvas*, on 30 December.

• **San Silvestre Vallecana:** the New Year's Eve race, 31 December.

• **Naviluz:** the Christmas lights bus. The 2026 service was still unconfirmed by the ticket seller when we checked, so we don't give a price or dates.

## Barcelona: Fira de Santa Llúcia and the Christmas fairs

The **Fira de Santa Llúcia** in front of the Cathedral is Barcelona's main Christmas fair, documented since 1786. The organiser's site still showed 2025 when we checked, and the city's Christmas website says it will update in November.

**2026 dates:** two third-party listings disagree. One gives 28 November to 23 December and calls it confirmed; another gives 26 November to 23 December. A third site, dated 15 October 2026, says the dates are unpublished. The city says only that stalls go up in late November or early December, always before 13 December, and stay until Christmas. Late November to about 23 December is a safe working window, but wait for the organiser before you fix a date.

**Last official pattern (2025, not a 2026 fact):**

• **Dates:** 28 November to 23 December 2025.

• **Hours:** daily 10:00 to 21:00.

• **Stalls:** 215 on Avinguda de la Catedral, mostly nativity scenes and figures, trees, moss and tió logs, with crafts and gifts.

• **Getting there:** the organiser suggests metro to Catalunya or Urquinaona.

The **tió** is one of the things to look for: a log with a painted face that Catalan children feed before Christmas and then beat with sticks until it "gives" sweets and small gifts. Look too for the *caganer*, the small crouching figure Catalans hide in their nativity scenes.

**Twelfth Night Fair:** the toy and gift fair on Gran Via, between Rocafort and Muntaner, ran 18 December to 6 January last season. That is the 2025-26 listing; expect a similar pattern. The city's Christmas lights ran from 17:30 to 01:00 Sunday to Thursday last season, and later on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves.

## Three Kings parades, Tuesday 5 January 2027

In Spain the Three Kings bring the main presents, and the parades happen in almost every town on the evening of 5 January. Neither Madrid nor Barcelona had published a 2027 route when we checked.

• **Madrid:** esMadrid's Christmas agenda lists 5 January from 18:00 to 21:00. The parade normally runs down the Paseo de la Castellana to Plaza de Cibeles. Our [Three Kings Day guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/three-kings-day-2027-spain-madrid-cabalgata-roscon) covers the route, where to stand, roscón and the 7 January sales, so we won't repeat them here.

• **Barcelona:** one events listing gives 18:00 to about 21:10 on 5 January 2027. The city's 2026 page gave 5 January from 18:00. Press guides for 2026 put the route between Parc de la Ciutadella and the Font Màgica on Montjuïc. The city publishes a live map of the floats on the day, and road closures affect buses along the route.

Arrive early if you are with children.

## What closes: dates that differ between Madrid and Barcelona

Madrid and Barcelona don't share the same holiday calendar, and that catches people out in December. In 2026 Constitution Day, 6 December, falls on a Sunday. Madrid's regional calendar moves it to Monday 7 December. Catalonia's does not, but it keeps 26 December as a holiday and Madrid does not. These two details come from published regional calendars rather than the state gazette, so confirm them if you are planning around that day.

| Date | Madrid | Barcelona |

## Museums and sights over the holidays

• **Prado:** closed 25 December and 1 January, and open 10:00 to 14:00 on 24 and 31 December and 6 January, as listed in our [Three Kings Day guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/three-kings-day-2027-spain-madrid-cabalgata-roscon). The museum's own page did not load for us this time, so confirm before you go.

• **Sagrada Família:** the basilica's official site gives 09:00 to 14:00 on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January. See our [Sagrada Família tickets guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sagrada-familia-barcelona-dress-code-tickets-guide).

• **Restaurants:** we found no reliable citywide list. Check and book ahead for the evenings of 24 and 31 December.

• **Shops:** plan to buy food the day before a public holiday. Holiday trading hours vary by store and region, and we did not confirm them for 2026.

## Where to stay near the markets

• **Madrid, for Plaza Mayor and Sol:** Sol and the Barrio de las Letras put the market, Puerta del Sol and the lights on foot. Sol is the most hectic on 30 and 31 December, so Letras is usually the better sleep.

• **Madrid, for the parade:** Salamanca and Chamberí are close to the Castellana route.

• **Barcelona, for the Fira:** the Gothic Quarter is steps from the Cathedral. Eixample has more restaurants, easy metro links and less street noise. If you stay in the old town, read our [Barcelona scams guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tourist-scams-in-barcelona).
