**Christmas in New Zealand is a summer holiday: long evenings, beaches, barbecues and campsites, with the red pōhutukawa in flower along northern coasts. Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026) is one of the few days when almost all shops must close by law, supermarkets included, and off-licences cannot sell alcohol; dairies, petrol stations, cafés and restaurants can open. Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December) is a public holiday but a normal shopping day, famous for sales.** Popular DOC campsites for the Christmas and New Year weeks book out months ahead. We spent 23 days on the South Island from 23 February to 18 March 2023, late summer rather than Christmas, so the details below come from Employment New Zealand, DOC and church sources rather than our own Christmas there.

## Christmas in summer

New Zealand's Christmas falls at the start of the long summer break. Schools are out, many offices and trades close for a week or more, and New Zealanders head for the beach, the lake or the bach (holiday home). A typical Christmas Day is a family lunch or barbecue, often with ham, new potatoes, fresh berries and pavlova, followed by the beach.

Weather varies a lot by region and by year. The north of the North Island is usually warmer and more humid; the South Island can swing from hot days in Central Otago to cold rain on the West Coast, and alpine passes can still see snow. Pack layers and a rain jacket even in December; our [best time to visit New Zealand](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-new-zealand) has the month-by-month picture.

Daylight is the big bonus: around the solstice on 21 December it stays light until about 21:00 or later, and later the further south you go, so long drives and evening walks are easy.

## Pōhutukawa: New Zealand's Christmas tree

The **pōhutukawa** is a coastal tree whose crown turns bright red to crimson with flowers in December, which is why it is called New Zealand's Christmas tree. According to Te Ara, the government's encyclopedia of New Zealand, flowering runs from November to January and peaks in mid to late December, with individual trees flowering at different times and in different shades.

Its natural range is the coast of the upper North Island, south to about northern Taranaki in the west and Māhia Peninsula in the east, though it has been planted widely elsewhere, according to Te Ara and DOC. Auckland's beaches, the Coromandel and Northland are the places to see it at its best over Christmas.

DOC notes the tree is still threatened by possums and people. Do not break off flowering branches for decoration, and keep off the exposed roots on cliff edges.

## What's open and closed on Christmas Day

Christmas Day is a **restricted trading day** under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990, alongside Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day morning. Employment New Zealand's guidance says almost all shops must close, and opening without an exemption can bring a fine of up to $1,000.

• **Can open:** dairies (corner shops) and petrol stations selling food, drink and everyday essentials; shops selling only ready-to-eat food, including cafés, takeaways and coffee carts; pharmacies; duty-free shops; service businesses that sell no goods; and some shops in a few tourist areas with old area exemptions, such as Queenstown and Taupō.

• **Must close:** supermarkets, department stores, malls and most other retail. Unlike Easter Sunday, councils cannot let shops open on Christmas Day.

• **Alcohol:** off-licences, including supermarkets and bottle stores, cannot sell alcohol on Christmas Day (cellar doors selling their own wine are the exception). Since an amendment that took effect on 3 April 2026, on-licence venues (bars, pubs, restaurants and hotels) can sell alcohol on Christmas Day as on any other day, subject to their licence; before that, you had to be dining or staying on the premises. Buy what you need by Christmas Eve.

• **Mondayising does not move the closure:** even when Christmas Day falls on a weekend, the trading restriction applies on 25 December itself.

Practical upshot: do your grocery shop by 24 December (Christmas Eve is a normal, very busy trading day), and book Christmas lunch if you want a restaurant. Cafés and restaurants that open often add a public holiday surcharge to cover staff pay, as staff must be paid at least time and a half. Public transport runs reduced or no services in many places, so check your local operator. Our [New Zealand grocery guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-new-zealand) helps with the 24th, and the [tipping guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-new-zealand-restaurants-guide) explains surcharges and tips.

## Boxing Day and the public holidays

Employment New Zealand lists these dates for 2026 to 2027:

• **Christmas Day:** Friday 25 December 2026.

• **Boxing Day:** Saturday 26 December 2026, observed on Monday 28 December for people who do not normally work on Saturdays.

• **New Year's Day:** Friday 1 January 2027; the day after New Year's Day is Saturday 2 January, observed on Monday 4 January for those who do not work Saturdays.

Boxing Day is not a restricted trading day, so shops open as normal and many run their biggest sales of the year. Expect busy malls and roads, and holiday surcharges at cafés. The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the peak of domestic summer travel, so book ferries, campsites and holiday parks early.

Regional anniversary days add more holidays: Wellington's is Monday 25 January 2027. For New Year's Eve ideas elsewhere, see [best places to celebrate New Year's Eve abroad](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-places-to-celebrate-new-years-eve-abroad).

## DOC campsites and Great Walks over Christmas

Camping is the classic New Zealand Christmas, which is exactly why the good sites go early. DOC opened bookings for stays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 in May 2026: North Island campsites on 14 May, South Island campsites on 15 May, and Tōtaranui in Abel Tasman National Park on 22 May. DOC advises booking well ahead for the peak period from 1 December to 28 February and for public holiday weekends, and names Tōtaranui, Mueller Hut and Hooker Hut among the places that regularly sell out.

• **No walk-up spaces:** on bookable DOC campsites, DOC says no spaces are kept for campers arriving without a booking; same-day online bookings are possible until 20:00 if anything is left.

• **Fees:** a standard campsite such as Otto/MacDonalds on the West Coast charges $18 per adult per night and $9 per child (5 to 17), with a $10 service fee if you book in person or by phone.

• **If you are late:** look at less famous sites, weekdays, or the Heaphy, Lake Waikaremoana and Whanganui Journey, which DOC says often have space.

• **Freedom camping:** stricter than many visitors expect; read our [freedom camping rules guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/new-zealand-freedom-camping-rules-certified-self-contained-fines) before planning nights off-site.

Our [23-day South Island road trip](https://clevertourists.com/resources/new-zealand-south-island-itinerary-our-23-day-road-trip) shows the route we took in late summer 2023, including Te Anau, Milford Sound and Henry Creek on the Milford Road, and [driving in New Zealand](https://clevertourists.com/resources/driving-in-new-zealand-tourist-guide) covers the roads.

## Christmas services

Churches across New Zealand hold Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, and visitors are welcome. Times are posted from early December. As an example, **Holy Trinity Cathedral** in Parnell, Auckland held a Festal Choral Eucharist from 10:00 to 11:30 on Christmas Day 2025, and its Christmas schedule listed a Midnight Mass starting at 23:30 on Christmas Eve; the cathedral closed to visitors after the services on Christmas Day.

In Christchurch, the Transitional ("Cardboard") Cathedral and in Wellington, the Cathedral of St Paul publish their own Christmas services; we could not find their 2025 times, so check their websites in December. RNZ broadcast an ecumenical Christmas Day service from central Wellington churches in 2025.

Dress is relaxed by European standards, and summer clothing is normal, though tidy is appreciated. Carols by Candlelight events in parks are popular in the weeks before Christmas and often free; councils list them on their events pages.
