**Friday 25 December 2026 is an ordinary working day in Marrakech: Christmas does not appear on any Moroccan public holiday calendar we checked, while 1 January 2027 does.** Souks, sights and restaurants keep normal hours, and Ramadan is nowhere near: the UK Foreign Office identifies February 2027 as its next start. The busy time is New Year, not Christmas, when Marrakech's hotel association describes the true peak of the season. We were in Marrakech in September 2022, not December, so this page uses named sources, checked in late October 2026. We found no reliable 2026 hotel or gala prices, so we quote none.

## What 25 December is like

Morocco is a Muslim-majority country and Christmas is not a national holiday. Offices, banks, schools and shops work as usual. There is no city-wide Christmas programme that we could find, and no Christmas market to plan around. That is the appeal for some travellers, and a poor fit if you want a festive atmosphere.

This year the 25th falls on a Friday, the main day of communal prayer. Some shops and stalls may pause or close around midday, so do your souk shopping in the morning or late afternoon.

The nearest public holiday is **Friday 1 January 2027**. Calendars also list 11 January, Independence Manifesto Day, which is a fixed date; check it if your trip runs that long, since banks and government offices will be affected.

## What's open at Christmas

We found no Christmas exception for any of these, but confirm anything date-critical:

• **The souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa:** normal trading, apart from the Friday pattern above.

• **Bahia Palace:** 09:00 to 17:00 at 100 MAD (≈ $10.2) for foreign adults, as listed in our [how many days in Marrakech guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-marrakech). Recheck on the day.

• **Jardin Majorelle:** tickets are sold online only on the official site, so book in advance over the holiday weeks.

• **Restaurants and cafés:** normal hours. Alcohol is not available everywhere, so ask if a Christmas drink matters. Hotels are the safer bet.

• **Banks and ATMs:** normal on the 25th. Banks close on 1 January, so see our [dirham and ATM guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-dirham-closed-currency-exchange-atm-guide) and carry cash for small purchases.

Day trips run too, subject to weather; see [day trips from Marrakech](https://clevertourists.com/resources/day-trips-from-marrakech). For the view across all countries, our [Christmas Day closures guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/whats-open-on-christmas-day-abroad-europe-asia) shows how different this is from Europe.

## Going to church in Marrakech

The Catholic parish is the **Église des Saints-Martyrs** on Rue Imam Ali in Gueliz, part of the Archdiocese of Rabat. Undated travel listings give Sunday Mass at 10:00 and weekday evening Mass at 18:30. We could not find 2026 Christmas service times, and we will not guess them. Contact the archdiocese through its website, or ask your riad to call, from mid-December.

Dress modestly, and check the time shortly before you go, since Christmas times often differ from the weekly schedule.

## December weather

We could not reach Moroccan meteorological normals, so these are commercial climate sites. Weather2travel and Weather and Climate put December highs around 19 to 20°C (66 to 68°F), with lows near 6°C (43°F). Our [best places for Christmas guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-places-to-spend-christmas-abroad) gives a wider range of 14 to 20°C by day and 4 to 8°C at night, which allows for cooler spells.

Rain figures conflict badly: from about 13 mm (Holiday-Weather) to 35 mm (Weather2travel) for the month, and from 1 to 8 rainy days. Expect a mainly dry month with some wet days, not a guarantee of sun.

The nights are the point to plan for. Our [Morocco in winter guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-in-winter-weather-sahara-atlas-ramadan-2027-guide) says to ask whether a bedroom has heating and hot water, not just how the courtyard looks. A warm evening layer matters on an open rooftop; [our Morocco packing list](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-pack-for-morocco-packing-list) has the rest. The UK Foreign Office warns that mountain roads can be hazardous in bad weather, so keep any Atlas or desert leg flexible.

## New Year demand: the real peak

Hotel pressure builds after Christmas rather than on it:

• **December 2025:** Hespress quoted Ahmed Bennani, president of the Marrakech-Safi regional hotel association, on 22 December saying the true peak is typically tied to New Year. The same report said historic medina riads were fully booked, though hotels overall had not yet reached capacity. That season also overlapped with the Africa Cup of Nations, which does not repeat this year.

• **December 2024:** Médias24 headlined Marrakech accommodation as full from 27 December to 2 January. We saw the headline and summary, not the full article.

• **School holidays:** French school calendars show the Christmas break as 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. We read that on several calendars, not the ministry's own page, which we could not open.

Our reading is that 21 to 26 December should be easier to book than 27 December to 2 January. That is inferred from those reports, not a published occupancy figure for 2026. It is also no promise of bargains or short stays: we have no 2026 rate data, and the minimum stays described below can start before Christmas.

## What hotels and riads do at New Year

The practice to watch is the package. Open Doors Morocco, a tour operator writing in July 2025, says most hotels demand minimum stays of 5 to 7 nights from the last two weeks of December to the first week of January, and that gala dinners are sometimes mandatory and not always mentioned up front. It gives no prices, and it is one operator's account, not a rule. Luxury resorts do publish gala evenings, but the 2026 terms we could see were incomplete.

Before paying, ask for these in writing:

• Is there a minimum stay across your dates?

• Is a Christmas or New Year dinner compulsory, and what does it cost per person?

• Is the price per room or per person, and does it include tax and breakfast?

• Is there music on the roof or in the courtyard until late, if you want quiet?

• Is the room heated, and what is the cancellation policy?

Some hotels may add a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day menu for foreign guests. We found no published 2026 Marrakech menus, so ask rather than assume.

## Where to stay

We have no separate where-to-stay page for Marrakech yet. These are areas, not hotel picks.

• **The medina:** riads, close to the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa. Cars cannot reach many doors, and small courtyards can feel cold at night, so ask about heating.

• **Gueliz:** the newer town, with restaurants and the Catholic church, and a practical base for taxis and Jardin Majorelle.

• **Hivernage:** larger hotels just outside the medina walls. Ask about New Year packages here before you book.

Our [how many days in Marrakech guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-marrakech) suggests three days for a first visit, and our [Marrakech and the Sahara guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/marrakech-and-the-sahara) covers the city. A 5 to 7-night minimum, if one applies, is longer than that plan, so ask before booking or add the coast: see our [Essaouira guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/marrakech-to-essaouira-bus-day-trip-guide).

## What we could not confirm

No 2026 hotel rates, gala prices, minimum-stay rules for a named property, Christmas service times or official New Year street events. We also make no claim about fireworks: one operator mentions them over Jemaa el-Fnaa, but we found nothing official for 2026.

Ramadan is not a factor at Christmas. For February 2027 and the rest of winter, see our [Ramadan 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/visiting-morocco-during-ramadan-2027-guide).
