# What Is Christmas in London Like in 2026, and What Closes on 25 December?

**There are no National Rail trains on Friday 25 December 2026 and very few on Saturday 26 December, according to National Rail's 2026/27 summary.** We could not read TfL's 2026 plan, but in 2025 most TfL services did not run on Christmas Day and the Elizabeth line stopped on both days, and TfL published that plan on 2 December. Large shops must close on the 25th by law, and Boxing Day's bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. The build-up is the easier time to visit: Time Out's list has lights switching on from 1 November. We were in London in November and December 2023, not over Christmas, so this page reports official sources and named listings, checked in late October 2026.

## The dates that matter in 2026

The rail column is National Rail's 2026/27 summary. The TfL column is the **2025 pattern**, not a 2026 announcement. National Rail also warns of "lots of" engineering works from 24 December to 4 January, so check every journey, including any airport train.

| Date | Status | National Rail 2026 | TfL in 2025 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Thu 24 Dec | Normal working day | Many routes finish early | Services finished early |
| Fri 25 Dec | Bank holiday | No services | Most services did not run |
| Sat 26 Dec | Boxing Day, not the bank holiday this year | Most operators none; very limited service, details to be confirmed | Parts of the network did not run, including the Elizabeth line |
| Mon 28 Dec | Substitute bank holiday | Services running; check planners | Not separately stated |
| Thu 31 Dec | Normal working day | Some routes finish early | Ran all night, apart from planned closures |
| Fri 1 Jan | Bank holiday | Special London services after midnight; guide due early December | Not separately stated |

## Christmas lights: 2026 switch-on dates

These dates come from Time Out's list of 26 October 2026. We could not open most organisers' own pages, so treat them as reported, not official:

• **Leicester Square:** Sunday 1 November.

• **St Martin's Lane:** Tuesday 3 November.

• **Carnaby Street:** Wednesday 4 November.

• **Regent Street and Battersea Power Station:** Thursday 5 November.

• **Knightsbridge:** Tuesday 10 November.

• **Marylebone Village:** Wednesday 11 November.

• **Covent Garden, Bond Street (7pm), and Chelsea's King's Road and Sloane Square:** Thursday 12 November.

• **Christmas at Kew:** from Friday 13 November, a ticketed trail that must be booked ahead.

• **Fleet Street:** Wednesday 18 November.

• **Leadenhall Market and St Katharine Docks:** Thursday 19 November.

**Oxford Street** is listed as TBC. Londonist has estimated around 2 November, but that is an estimate, and its pages differ from Time Out by a day on Carnaby (about 5 November) and Covent Garden (11 November). Older listings of 14 November for Oxford Street appear to be left over from a past year.

**The Trafalgar Square tree** usually lights up on the first Thursday in December, which would be 3 December 2026. That is a pattern, not an announcement: the 2025 ceremony was on Thursday 4 December. City Hall says carol sessions run at the tree through December but gave no 2026 dates when we checked.

## Christmas markets: reported 2026 dates

Time Out published this list on 28 October 2026. Where it gave no year, we read the end date as January 2027.

• **Leicester Square:** 31 October to 3 January.

• **Southbank Centre Winter Market:** 2 November to 3 January.

• **Trafalgar Square:** 6 November to 3 January.

• **Winter by the River, London Bridge City:** 10 November to 3 January.

• **Covent Garden:** 12 November to 2 January.

• **Kingston:** 12 November to 3 January.

• **King's Cross Winter Market:** 26 November to 3 January.

• **Camden Market:** from 26 November, no end date given.

• **Borough Market:** Christmas programme through December, no specific days given.

**Sources differ here.** At last check, Visit London still showed Leicester Square as TBC and Southbank as expected, and one third-party guide ends Southbank on 4 January. No source we saw gave hours for 24 to 26 December, so do not assume any market trades on those days. Greenwich Market is a year-round covered market, not a seasonal one.

If stalls are the point of the trip, compare our [Europe Christmas markets planner](https://clevertourists.com/resources/europe-christmas-markets-2026-dates-planning-guide). [Hyde Park Winter Wonderland](https://clevertourists.com/resources/hyde-park-winter-wonderland-2026-dates-tickets-guide) is a separate ticketed event, closed on the 25th.

## Getting around on Christmas Day

Plan the 25th as a day without public transport. TfL's 2025 list of what did run is the best guide until the 2026 plan appears:

• **Available in 2025:** taxis and private hire, Santander Cycles, rental e-scooters, Dial-a-Ride and Victoria Coach Station.

• **Road charges in 2025:** the Congestion Charge was suspended from 25 December to 1 January, and ULEZ did not apply on Christmas Day.

• **Airports:** with no National Rail trains and no Elizabeth line, an arrival or departure on the 25th means a taxi or pre-booked car. Our [Heathrow guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/london-heathrow-to-city-guide) lists the normal options, none of which you should assume on this date.

We would avoid flying in on the 25th or 26th. If you must, pre-book the transfer before you leave home. Otherwise arrive by the 23rd, and leave on the 27th or later after checking that day's trains. Birmingham New Street is also closed from 24 to 28 December for upgrade work, which matters if you are connecting north.

## What closes on 24, 25, 26 and 28 December

• **Shops:** the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 bars large shops, over 280 m² of sales floor, from opening on 25 December in England and Wales. Small shops can open, but visitor guides say most places close anyway. On the 24th, many close early. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year and the sales usually start then, but check each store.

• **Museums:** the Natural History Museum lists itself as closed 24 to 26 December. The British Museum and the Wallace Collection have also closed on those dates. Many others shut on the 25th and 26th, so check each one. Our [free museums guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/london-oyster-vs-contactless-free-museums-guide) helps with the days around them.

• **Pubs and restaurants:** most pubs are shut on Christmas Day and those that open have short hours. Hotel restaurants and some Chinatown restaurants are the likeliest places to eat, usually by reservation. Book before you travel.

• **Parks:** Royal Parks lists Hyde Park's pedestrian gates as open 5am to midnight, with no exception shown, so a long walk is a realistic plan for the 25th. Check for any late notice.

Winter is also dark and cool: our [England in December guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/england-in-december-weather-what-to-do) gives Heathrow averages of about 9°C (48°F) by day and 3°C (38°F) at night. Our [country-by-country Christmas closures guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/whats-open-on-christmas-day-abroad-europe-asia) compares London with the rest of Europe.

## Where to stay

Over Christmas, location matters more than usual, because you may walk everywhere on the 25th. These are areas, not hotel picks.

• **Covent Garden and Soho:** walkable to the West End lights, Trafalgar Square and Chinatown.

• **Southwark:** the river walk runs to the Southbank Centre market and Borough Market.

• **Bloomsbury:** quieter, and a walk from the West End.

• **South Kensington:** beside Hyde Park, good for families, though the museums there close over Christmas.

Our [where to stay in London guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-london) compares these, and [how many days in London](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-london) helps with length. Before paying, ask whether your hotel's restaurant is open on the 25th and whether you need to book.

## After Christmas, and what to recheck

National Rail says trains run on Monday 28 December; check Sunday 27 December in the journey planner. Most markets on Time Out's list carry on into January. For the night of the 31st, use our [London New Year's Eve fireworks guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/london-new-years-eve-fireworks-2026-tickets-guide), which covers tickets and viewing areas.

Recheck three things in December: TfL's 2026 plan, National Rail's last-trains guide (due late November or early December), and any museum or market you are building a day around.
