**Friday 25 December 2026 is an ordinary working day in Istanbul, and the real holiday is New Year: Turkish holiday calendars list 1 January 2027 as a public holiday, and Christmas not at all.** Churches still hold Christmas services, including St Anthony of Padua on İstiklal Avenue, but their 2026 times were not published when we checked in late October. Expect cool, damp weather: the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) averages 11.8°C by day and rain on about 15 days in December. We were in Istanbul in October and November 2023, not December, so this page relies on named sources.

## What 25 December is like

Turkey is a majority-Muslim, officially secular country, and Christmas is not a public holiday. Shops, offices, banks and transport work normally. Most of the trees, lights and Santa figures you will see are there for New Year, not Christmas, so the city can look festive through December while the 25th itself passes as a working day.

That makes Istanbul a practical choice if you want sightseeing at Christmas without European closures. It is a poor choice if you want a Christmas atmosphere on the day.

## Church services at Christmas

Istanbul has small Christian communities with different calendars. **No 2026 service times were available at any of these when we checked.** The times below are history, not a schedule. Confirm in December.

**St Anthony of Padua** is the most practical for visitors. It is Istanbul's largest Catholic church, at İstiklal Avenue 171. In 2019, Daily Sabah reported carols at 20:00 and Mass at 21:00 on Christmas Eve, then Christmas Day Masses in English at 10:00, Polish and Italian at 11:30 and Turkish at 19:00. A 2026 guide describes the same general pattern.

**Source conflict on Orthodox dates:** one 2026 tour-company guide says Orthodox service dates do not match Western Christmas. For the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, that does not match the reports we found, which describe Patriarch Bartholomew leading the Christmas Liturgy on 25 December at St George's in Fener. The **Armenian** date differs: a travel guide puts Armenian Christmas at the Kumkapı patriarchate on 6 January, the same day as the [Theophany cross dive in the Golden Horn](https://clevertourists.com/resources/theophany-2027-istanbul-cross-dive-golden-horn).

Dress as you would for any service, arrive early, and leave large bags at your hotel. The UK Foreign Office lists places of worship and large gatherings among possible terrorist targets in Turkey, so stay alert and follow any security instructions at the door.

| Church | Area | Tradition | Christmas date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| St Anthony of Padua | Beyoğlu, İstiklal Avenue | Roman Catholic | 24 to 25 December |
| St Mary Draperis | Beyoğlu | Roman Catholic | 24 to 25 December |
| Union Church of Istanbul | Beyoğlu | Protestant, English and Turkish | Times unpublished |
| St George's Patriarchal Church | Fener | Greek Orthodox | 25 December in reported years |
| Armenian Patriarchate church | Kumkapı | Armenian Apostolic | 6 January, per a travel guide |

## December weather

MGM's long-term averages for Istanbul, already cited in our [Istanbul and Cappadocia in winter guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-cappadocia-in-winter-weather-snow-balloons-guide):

• **December:** 11.8°C (53°F) high, 6.5°C (44°F) low, 99.2 mm of rain over about 15.5 days.

• **January:** 9.6°C (49°F) high, 4.2°C (40°F) low, 88.8 mm over about 16.3 days.

Some travel sites call December one of the driest months in Istanbul. MGM's figures do not support that. Pack a waterproof jacket and shoes for wet cobbles; our [Turkey packing list](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-pack-for-turkey-istanbul-cappadocia) has the rest. Snow is possible but not reliable, and it can disrupt ferries and flights.

## What's open

Over Christmas week, assume normal hours and check specifics:

• **Friday 25 December:** a normal day, but mosques pause tourist access around prayer times, and Friday noon is the main one. Visit the [Blue Mosque](https://clevertourists.com/resources/blue-mosque-istanbul-dress-code-visit-guide) in the morning, and see [mosque dress code](https://clevertourists.com/resources/mosque-dress-code-turkey).

• **Sunday 27 December:** the Grand Bazaar is closed, as on every Sunday.

• **Thursday 31 December:** not a public holiday, so daytime sightseeing runs as normal. Book dinner ahead.

• **Friday 1 January:** a public holiday. Hours can differ. One tour-company guide lists Topkapı as open and Dolmabahçe as closed that day; we could not confirm this officially, so check both.

**Christmas markets:** Istanbul has no traditional city market. Temporary winter markets appear at hotels, malls and waterfront sites, and one guide expects a market at Life Park from 5 to 28 December. We found no organiser confirmation, so treat that as unverified, along with any listing for Galataport.

If you are building a longer trip, our [3 days in Istanbul guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/3-days-in-istanbul) gives a plan that works in winter, and [Cappadocia in winter](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-cappadocia-in-winter-weather-snow-balloons-guide) covers the balloon risk.

## Why New Year is the bigger celebration

*Yılbaşı*, New Year, is a secular celebration in Turkey, and it has taken on many customs that visitors associate with Christmas. These descriptions come from Daily Sabah, Time Out Istanbul and other general guides, so read them as broad habits, not rules:

• **The tree:** a decorated fir is a *yılbaşı ağacı*, a New Year's tree.

• **Noel Baba:** Santa appears at New Year, not on the 25th. Turkey has a link to him, since Saint Nicholas was bishop of Myra, modern Demre, on the south coast.

• **Gifts and dinner:** presents are exchanged on New Year's Eve. Families often gather at home, and roast turkey, nuts and tangerines are described as typical.

• **The lottery:** Timeanddate lists a national lottery draw among New Year's Eve activities.

Many people spend the evening at home or at private parties, so the street crowds show only part of how the night is marked.

## New Year's Eve 2026 in Istanbul

**No official 2026 to 2027 programme had been published when we checked.** Here is what happened last year, labelled as such.

**Where people went in 2025 to 2026:** CNN Türk reported large crowds on Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue, fireworks viewed against the Bosphorus at Ortaköy, and countdowns in Kadıköy, with heavy police security at the sites. The report does not say who ran the fireworks, so we do not describe them as an official municipal display.

**Transport in 2025 to 2026:** Habertürk, citing the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), said M1 to M9 metro lines ran through the night, trams T1, T3, T4 and T5 and funiculars F1 and F4 ran to 02:00, and buses and the metrobus added 680 trips. NTV reported that İBB made municipal transport free on 1 January 2026. **None of that is confirmed for this year.** 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, so do not count on the usual weekend night services. Check Metro İstanbul and İBB notices nearer the date, and plan to walk back if you can.

**Practical points:** guides warn that taxis are hard to find after midnight. Load an Istanbulkart in advance. The UK Foreign Office warns of pickpocketing in major tourist areas, and of drink spiking and methanol-contaminated alcohol in Istanbul. It also lists public holidays and large gatherings among possible terrorist targets, so read its current advice before choosing a crowded square. Buy drinks from licensed places, and our [Is Turkey safe guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-turkey-safe-to-visit) covers the rest.

Hotels and restaurants sell gala dinners, but the 2027 programmes we saw were still unfinished, and we found no prices we could confirm. Ask for the menu, price per person and music end time in writing. For a bigger-scale New Year, compare [the best places to celebrate abroad](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-places-to-celebrate-new-years-eve-abroad).

## Where to stay

These are areas, not hotel picks. Our [where to stay in Istanbul guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-istanbul) compares them in detail.

• **Beyoğlu, Galata and Karaköy:** walkable to St Anthony's and the other İstiklal churches, and to the New Year crowds. Expect noise on the 31st.

• **Sultanahmet:** best for Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and away from the main crowds reported last year. It is on the T1 tram, which ran to 02:00 last year.

• **Kadıköy:** the Asian side, with a local feel and last year's countdown crowds, but check ferries before you commit to a late night across the water.

We do not have a how-many-days page for Istanbul yet; our [3 days in Istanbul guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/3-days-in-istanbul) and [10-day Turkey itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/turkey-itinerary-10-days) are the best guides to length. For arrival, see [Istanbul Airport to the city](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-airport-to-city-center-havaist-metro-taxi-guide).

## What we could not confirm

No 2026 service times for any church, no official New Year's Eve programme, no 2026 to 2027 transport plan, and no organiser-confirmed Christmas market dates. Check each in December.
