**Christmas in Bali is a peak-season holiday in the wet season, on a mostly Hindu island where almost nothing closes. Indonesia's joint ministerial decree makes Friday 25 December 2026 a national holiday and Thursday 24 December a collective leave day, so domestic visitors arrive for a four-day weekend.** The 2026 twist is the rain: Antara and RRI reports of BMKG's forecast say a very strong El Niño has pushed the start of Bali's rains back to late November or December, with the peak in February 2027, so this Christmas may be drier than the averages. That is a forecast, not a promise. We were in Seminyak from 19 to 22 May 2023 and Ubud from 25 to 30 May 2023, in the dry season, so this page uses Indonesian government and news sources.

## Natal in Indonesia: the dates

The 2026 decree (SKB 3 Menteri), published on the State Secretariat's website, lists **Friday 25 December** as the national holiday for Christmas (*Natal*) and **Thursday 24 December** as *cuti bersama*, a collective leave day. With the weekend, that makes four days off from 24 to 27 December for much of Indonesia.

Government offices close on those days, and banks are expected to follow. New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027 gives a second long weekend. Indonesians call the whole period **Nataru**, short for Natal and Tahun Baru (New Year), and you will see that word on airport and traffic notices.

Bali is mainly Hindu, so Christmas is a holiday here without being a Balinese festival. Hotels, malls and tourist restaurants decorate and run Christmas dinners, and the Christian community marks it in church. Temples, ceremonies and daily offerings carry on regardless.

## What closes, and what doesn't

For a visitor, very little closes. Restaurants, beach clubs, spas, shops and tour operators work through Christmas, because it is their busiest fortnight.

• **Closed:** government offices and most banks on 24 and 25 December, and again on 1 January. Sort out any visa extension before the 23rd. ATMs still work.

• **Open:** hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, tourist attractions and the airport.

• **Busy:** anything popular. Reserve Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners, and expect set menus at the bigger places.

We found no official list of Christmas closures for Bali, so this is general guidance. Check your own booking, especially for small family businesses.

## Rain in December 2026: what is forecast

In a normal year, December is properly wet: our [Bali in December guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-in-december-weather-what-to-do) has the 1991 to 2020 climate normals, of about 300 mm in Denpasar.

This year the forecast is unusual. Antara reported on 29 September 2026 that Bali's rains were forecast to begin in late November, with a peak in **February 2027**, after a run of 123 days without rain at Sumberklampok, Buleleng. RRI reported on 7 October that the start could slip to November or December because of a very strong El Niño combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, with a shorter season than normal.

Sources are not in full agreement. BMKG's national outlook has December 2026 as the peak for a large share of Indonesia, while the Bali figure is February, and reports differ on how much of Bali gets rain from November rather than December. Our reading: plan for showers, enjoy it if they fail to arrive, and do not cancel your indoor options. Rain can start late and still fall hard.

Seas and beaches follow the west monsoon. Badung's environment agency reported about 20 tons of marine debris a day on the Kuta coast in December 2024, peaking in January at around double that. It said the problem normally eases by April. Our December guide names Kuta, Legian and Seminyak as the beaches most affected, so check conditions on the day or plan around [Ubud](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-ubud) instead. Rough seas have delayed speedboats at Sanur in past bad-weather spells, so leave a spare day around any Nusa Penida trip.

## Peak season and traffic

Christmas and New Year are among the busiest and most expensive weeks of Bali's year. No 2026 figures exist yet, so here is the recent pattern:

• **Airport:** Ngurah Rai handled about 1.4 million passengers from 15 December 2025 to 3 January 2026, an average of about 70,000 a day, according to detikBali. Departures reached 41,763 on 3 January as the return rush began.

• **Hotels:** in December 2024, Bali's transport agency expected hotels to be busy from 23 December to 6 January.

The road network is the weak point. For the 2024 to 2025 holiday, Antara reported that the transport agency would stop vehicles entering shopping centres and restaurants near the airport during serious congestion, naming Sunset Road, the Ngurah Rai Bypass, Tuban and Kuta as the likely roads. Bali police told visitors to avoid known jams and check navigation apps, and the tourism office urged tour businesses to steer visitors to the north, west and east of the island.

Practical moves: book your airport transfer in advance and allow plenty of time, avoid south Bali evenings on the 24th and 31st, and do not ride a scooter in heavy rain. ## Christmas services in Bali

Bali's Christian community is small but long established, and some of its Christmas services are worth seeing if you want more than a resort dinner. Times change each year, and the 2026 schedules were not out when we checked.

• **Palasari, Jembrana (west Bali):** the Sacred Heart church, in a Catholic village, where Antara has shown worshippers at Christmas Eve Mass in Balinese dress. A 2024 schedule reported by Tirto listed a vigil at 19:00 and Christmas Day Mass at 7:00.

• **Tuka, Badung:** Holy Trinity Church, where Antara reported Balinese cultural elements and traditional dress at Christmas Eve Mass in 2018.

• **Denpasar:** the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit is the main Catholic church. We could not confirm 2025 times.

Visitors may attend. Dress modestly, leave the beachwear at the hotel and arrive early. Our [what to wear in Bali](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-wear-in-bali) guide has more.

## Galungan and Nyepi: neither falls at Christmas

Two Balinese dates catch visitors out, but neither touches Christmas 2026.

• **Galungan** is next on Wednesday 13 January 2027, with Kuningan on Saturday 23 January. The bamboo *penjor* poles go up along the roads shortly before, so a January trip sees them. See our [Galungan and Kuningan guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/galungan-kuningan-2026-2027-bali-dates-guide).

• **Nyepi**, the Day of Silence, when the airport closes, is on Monday 8 March 2027. See our [Nyepi 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/nyepi-2027-bali-date-airport-closure-travel-guide).

## Where to base yourself

• **Ubud:** the wet-season choice, with indoor options when it rains, and no beach to be disappointed by. Central Ubud is walkable; Penestanan and Sayan need transport.

• **Seminyak:** for restaurants and sunset bars, if you accept the Christmas traffic and the seasonal debris on the west coast.

• **Sidemen or Munduk:** to escape the south entirely, with rice terraces and waterfalls, although mountain roads take longer in rain.
