**Fly. The direct Busan to Jeju ferry no longer runs: the overnight boat made its last sailing in December 2022 and no operator has taken the route over as of 2026.** Flights from Busan's **Gimhae Airport** to **Jeju International Airport** take **about 1 hour** in the air, with **roughly 26 flights a day**, and one-way fares that often sit somewhere around **₩35,000 to ₩100,000 (≈ $26–75)** on the budget carriers, more on holidays. The only way to reach Jeju by sea from Busan is to travel west first to **Wando**, **Goheung (Nokdong)** or **Mokpo** and take a ferry from there, which turns a one-hour hop into most of a day. We were in Busan from 18 to 22 June 2023 and went on to Seogwipo, on Jeju's south coast, for four nights.

## What happened to the Busan to Jeju ferry

For years an overnight car ferry linked **Busan Port** and **Jeju Port**, leaving Busan in the evening and arriving in Jeju early the next morning, about 11 to 12 hours at sea. That service ended in **December 2022**. Ferry booking sites that cover Korean routes still list it as discontinued in 2026, and travellers asking on forums in January 2026 were told no restart had been announced.

The other south-coast night ferry that people used as a substitute, **Yeosu to Jeju**, also stopped in **December 2024**, when its operator moved the ship to Wando.

So if an older blog post or a map app shows a Busan to Jeju ferry, treat it as out of date. Any 2026 listing that claims to sell a direct sailing deserves a hard look before you pay.

## Flying from Busan (Gimhae) to Jeju: the realistic option

**Airlines:** Korean Air, Asiana, Air Busan, Jeju Air and Jin Air all fly the route, and it is one of the busiest domestic routes in Korea. Aggregators count around **26 flights a day**, so outside peak holidays you can usually just pick a time.

**Flight time:** about **1 hour** gate to gate on the schedule.

**Price:** fares swing with demand. Snapshots on airline and aggregator pages in 2026 show budget-carrier fares from around **₩35,000 to ₩100,000 (≈ $26–75)** one way, Korean Air often higher, and occasional promotions much lower. Summer school holidays (late July to mid-August), **Chuseok** and **Seollal** are when cheap seats vanish; book those dates weeks ahead. Check the checked-bag allowance: the low fares on budget carriers usually include a small allowance, and extra weight is charged at the airport.

**Getting to Gimhae Airport:** the **Busan-Gimhae Light Rail** stops at the airport and connects with Busan Metro Line 2 and Line 3 at **Sasang** and Line 3 at **Daejeo**. From central Busan, allow about an hour door to door; from Haeundae, more. A taxi is simpler with luggage.

**Arriving in Jeju:** Jeju International Airport is on the edge of **Jeju City**, a short taxi or bus ride from the centre. If you are heading to **Seogwipo** or the south coast, the airport limousine bus and the express buses run across the island in roughly an hour. Our [Jeju without a car guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/jeju-without-a-car-bus-taxi-getting-around-guide) covers the bus routes and taxis in detail.

## Going by sea anyway: ferries via Wando, Goheung or Mokpo

If you want a ferry, perhaps to bring a car or because you prefer not to fly, you have to cross the mainland first. The current mainland routes to Jeju, per ferry booking listings in 2026, are:

• **Wando to Jeju:** Hanil Express, ships *Silver Cloud* and *Gold Stella*, about **2 hours 40 minutes**. This is the shortest regular car-ferry crossing.

• **Goheung (Nokdong) to Jeju:** Namhae Gosok, about **3 hours 30 minutes**.

• **Mokpo to Jeju:** Seaworld Express Ferry, about **4 hours 30 minutes**, including a night departure on many days.

• **Jindo to Jeju:** a Seaworld fast catamaran, about **1 hour 30 minutes**, booked directly with the operator.

Getting from Busan to these ports takes several hours by intercity bus (Wando and Goheung are deep in South Jeolla province), and timetables do not always line up, so the whole trip easily takes a full day. Sailing times and fares change by season and by ship; check the operator's own timetable for your date, as aggregator schedules are not always complete.

Only worth it if you are driving: a car ferry lets you keep a mainland rental or your own vehicle, whereas flying means renting again on Jeju.

## Ferry vs flight: the honest comparison

• **Time:** flight about 1 hour plus airport time, roughly 3 to 4 hours door to door. Ferry via Wando or Mokpo: most of a day.

• **Cost:** a budget flight is often cheaper than intercity bus fare to the south-west coast plus a ferry ticket.

• **Luggage:** ferries are relaxed about bags; budget airlines charge for overweight checked luggage.

• **Weather:** both can be disrupted. Ferries are cancelled in high seas, and typhoons in **August and September** ground flights and boats alike. Leave slack in your plans if you travel then.

For most visitors, flying is the answer. The ferry is for drivers and for people who want to see the south-west coast on the way.

## Fitting Jeju into a Korea route

Busan is the natural place to jump to Jeju from: you can arrive in Busan by KTX from Seoul in about 2.5 hours (see [Seoul to Busan by KTX](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seoul-to-busan-ktx-train-tickets-time-price-guide)), spend a few days there, then fly. Our own route ran Seoul, Jeonju, Suncheon, Busan, then four nights in Seogwipo and two in Jeju City, before going back to the mainland for three nights in Gyeongju.

Coming back, consider an open-jaw: fly Jeju to Busan if your next stop is [Gyeongju](https://clevertourists.com/resources/busan-to-gyeongju-train-bus-day-trip-guide), or Jeju to Seoul (Gimpo) if you are ending in the capital. Flights between Jeju and Gimpo are even more frequent than to Busan.

Stay on the island long enough to make the flight worth it. Our [how many days in Jeju](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-jeju) article argues for at least three, split between the north and the south coast, and [Seongsan Ilchulbong and the coastal route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/jeju-highlights-seongsan-ilchulbong-coastal-route-guide) covers the east side. For the bigger picture, see [our 32-day Korea route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/south-korea-itinerary-our-32-day-route-seoul-busan-jeju) and the [Busan guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/4-days-in-busan).

Domestic flights do not need a visa check, but you will have dealt with entry on arrival in Korea; see the [K-ETA guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/k-eta-2027-south-korea-how-to-apply-guide) for current rules.
