**Budapest does not have one city-wide tourist tax rate: the idegenforgalmi ado is set district by district. Some districts, including the ninth, charge 4% of the net room price, and others charge a flat forint amount per person per night (the 16th district's 2024 ordinance lists 330 forints). Guests under 18 are exempt, and the hotel collects the tax at check-in or check-out.** Because rates changed in about 150 Hungarian settlements in 2026, the exact figure for your stay depends on the district your hotel is in. We could not find a single official Budapest-wide table, so this page explains how the tax works and what a stay typically adds; ask your property for the exact amount. We spent 5 days in Budapest in October 2022, before going on to Eger and Tokaj.

## How the tax is set

Hungary's local tax law lets each municipality introduce a tourist tax. In Budapest the districts set and run their own, except for a few areas decided by the capital's general assembly. Councils choose either a percentage of the room price or a fixed amount per person per night, each within a national cap.

What we can verify:

• **District IX example:** a hotel in the ninth district states the city tax as 4.0% of the net accommodation rate.

• **District XVI example:** its 2024 ordinance sets a flat 330 forints per person per night.

• **National picture:** a Daily News Hungary report says rates changed in 150 settlements in 2026 and that the highest rate, HUF 830 per guest night, applies in seven resort towns, none of them Budapest. The maximum is linked to inflation, which is why many councils raised their rates.

So the practical range is: a few hundred forints per person per night where a flat rate applies, or 4% of the net room price where a percentage applies. We could not confirm the 2026 rate for every district.

## Who is exempt

• **Guests under 18** are exempt, even when travelling in a group, per a Budapest hotel's exemption notes and the national rules summarised in the Daily News Hungary report.

• **Other exemptions** appear in district rules: local residents of the district, hospital patients, students, owners or tenants of holiday homes, and people on official duty. A hotel in the ninth district publishes a form for these, to be completed before arrival.

• **Not exempt:** business travellers and school groups are not generally exempt, per the same hotel notes.

If you think you qualify, bring proof such as a student ID or registration card, and ask the front desk before check-in rather than at checkout.

## What it adds to a stay

Examples, using the two forms we can verify:

• **Percentage district (4%):** a net room price of HUF 40,000 a night adds HUF 1,600, so four nights adds HUF 6,400 for the room.

• **Flat district (HUF 330):** two adults for four nights pay 2 × 4 × 330 = HUF 2,640.

A hotel that includes breakfast should compute the 4% on the room, not breakfast, but ask. Compared with other European capitals this is a small charge, and it rarely changes the choice of where to stay. See [where to stay in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-budapest) for the district comparison, and the [Budapest Card](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-card-worth-it) if you plan to see several sights.

The tax cannot be paid with a SZÉP leisure card, which only matters for Hungarian residents.

## How you pay

The property collects it. Hotels add it to the invoice, usually as a separate line. Platforms sometimes show it as "city tax payable at property". At private apartments it should be on a receipt; a host who asks for cash without paperwork is a flag, as is one who asks for much more than the figures above. Our [Budapest scams guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tourist-scams-in-budapest) covers other money traps.

Hungary is also moving to simplify the paperwork: the government decided at the end of 2025 to have the national tourism data system draft hosts' declarations, with IT work expected to finish by the end of 2026. That affects hosts, not guests.

## Budgeting and next steps

Budget roughly HUF 1,000 to 3,000 per person for a few nights in most places; the sums above show the shape, and a luxury room in a percentage district will cost more because the tax scales with the price. If you are comparing a central hotel with one a few tram stops out, compare the nightly price first: the tax difference is small and the district you sleep in matters more for sightseeing time.
