A standard **Bran Castle** ticket costs **100 lei for an adult** (roughly €20 (≈ $22)), covering the castle interior and the Royal Park. Seniors pay 70 lei, students 60 lei, children 5 to 17 pay 40 lei and under-fives go free. The castle is open from **09:00 Tuesday to Sunday** and from **12:00 on Mondays**, closing at **19:00 from April to 1 November** and **18:00 from 2 November to 31 March**. From Brașov it is about a **45-minute bus ride** for 13 to 15 lei.

## Bran Castle ticket options

There are two practical ways to buy in:

• **Standard tour:** 100 lei adult, 70 lei seniors (65+), 60 lei students, 40 lei children aged 5 to 17, free under 5. Self-guided access to the castle and the Royal Park.

• **Royal Tour / fast pass:** around 170 lei adult and 110 lei child. Adds a priority lane plus the Torture Chambers and the Time Tunnel.

The Time Tunnel and the Torture Rooms can also be bought separately at roughly 30 lei each, which is worth comparing against the combo before you commit. Buying online on the official site avoids the ticket-office queue, which is the real bottleneck on summer weekends.

## Getting to Bran from Brașov without a tour

Brașov is the sensible base — we spent three and a half days there in October 2022 and used it for both Bran and the city itself.

Take a local bus to **Autogara 2** (Brașov's second bus station, in the Bartolomeu area), then a bus toward **Bran**, **Moeciu** or **Râșnov**. Buses run roughly hourly, take **45 to 50 minutes**, and cost about **13 to 15 lei** one way. Pay the driver and carry cash: card readers on rural routes are unreliable.

The bus drops you a short walk from the castle gates. For the return, the stop is across the road nearby — photograph the printed timetable when you arrive, because the last departure in the early evening is genuinely the last one, and a missed bus means a taxi back.

A taxi or ride-hailing car from Brașov is the alternative if you are short on time, and is reasonable split between two or three people.

## Opening hours, and what closes when

• **1 April to 1 November:** Monday 12:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 19:00

• **2 November to 31 March:** Monday 12:00 to 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 18:00

As with Corvin Castle, the Monday noon start is the trap. The published times are last entry, not closing, so leaving it until the final hour means being moved through rather than looking around.

Bran sits at about 1,000 m and gets cold and wet earlier than Brașov. In late autumn and winter the interior is heated but the courtyards and the walk up are not; this is a place where a proper jacket changes the visit.

## The Dracula problem, stated plainly

Bran is marketed as "Dracula's Castle", and that is a marketing claim rather than a historical one. Bram Stoker never visited Transylvania and never named Bran. The link most often cited is that Vlad the Impaler — the Wallachian ruler who inspired the character's name — may have passed through or been held briefly in the area, but there is no evidence he lived here.

What Bran actually is: a 14th-century fortress on a trade route through the Bran Pass, later a royal residence of Queen Marie of Romania, who restored it in the 1920s. The interior you walk through is largely her refurbishment, with period furniture and a well-regarded collection of art and ceramics.

That is not a reason to skip it — it is a reason to arrive expecting a royal residence in a spectacular setting rather than a vampire site. The building is genuinely good, and the courtyard well is a nice piece of theatre.
