**The best time to visit Turkey is April to early June or mid-September to October:** warm but not scorching days at Ephesus and Pamukkale, the best balloon conditions in Cappadocia, a sea still warm enough to swim on the south coast in October, and lower prices than the July and August peak. The trade-off is that Turkey is big: the coast and the interior have different seasons, so the right month depends on the mix. We spent a month in Turkey from 12 October to 14 November 2023: Istanbul, Ankara, Göreme in Cappadocia, Pamukkale, and Selçuk for Ephesus, Şirince and İzmir. This page covers the country; [Istanbul has its own month-by-month guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-istanbul).

## Quick answer by priority

• **Best weather overall:** May and late September to October.

• **Beach:** June to early October on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.

• **Fewest crowds:** November and March to early April, if you accept cold nights inland.

• **Cheapest:** November to March, except Christmas and New Year in Istanbul.

• **Avoid if you can:** July and August at Ephesus and Pamukkale (hot, exposed, crowded), and the Kurban Bayramı and Ramazan Bayramı holiday weeks if you need flights or buses at short notice.

## Turkey month by month

Inland figures are for Cappadocia (Nevşehir/Göreme); coastal for the Aegean around Selçuk and İzmir.

• **January and February:** Cappadocia highs about 4°C (39°F), lows well below freezing, snow on the fairy chimneys some weeks; balloons are grounded more often. The coast is mild but rainy. Cheapest season. See our [winter guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-cappadocia-in-winter-weather-snow-balloons-guide).

• **March:** cold nights inland, wildflowers starting on the coast. Ramadan runs through early March in 2027.

• **April:** highs about 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F), green valleys in Cappadocia and comfortable sightseeing at Ephesus. Our first pick with May.

• **May:** highs about 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). Excellent everywhere; the sea is still cool for swimming.

• **June:** hot on the coast, warm in Cappadocia, beach season begins. Crowds building.

• **July and August:** Cappadocia highs near 30°C (86°F) with cool nights; Ephesus, Pamukkale and the south coast often 35°C (95°F) or more. Peak prices on the coast.

• **September:** sea at its warmest, heat easing from mid-month. Excellent for a coast plus interior trip.

• **October:** highs about 18 to 25°C (64 to 77°F) depending on region. When we were in Istanbul and Ankara. Cappadocia mornings are crisp, good for balloon flights.

• **November:** Cappadocia highs drop to around 10°C (50°F), with frost at night; we were in Göreme, Pamukkale and Selçuk in early November. Quiet sites, low prices, short days.

• **December:** cold inland, wet on the coast. Istanbul fills up at New Year.

## By region: coast vs interior

• **Cappadocia (Göreme, Ürgüp, Derinkuyu):** high plateau, so cold winters and hot dry summer days with cool nights. Balloon flights run year-round but are cancelled more often in winter wind, fog and snow. Allow at least two or three mornings: see our [balloon cancellation guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/cappadocia-hot-air-balloon-cancelled-weather-booking-guide) and [how many days in Cappadocia](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-cappadocia). We spent 5 days in Göreme, with a day trip to the Derinkuyu underground city.

• **Pamukkale and Hierapolis:** you walk barefoot on white travertine with no shade. Avoid midday in July and August; spring and autumn are ideal. See our [Pamukkale guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/pamukkale-day-trip-travertines-hierapolis-tickets-guide). We spent 3 days here.

• **Ephesus, Selçuk and the Aegean:** the marble streets reflect heat; in summer go at opening time. We spent 5 days in Selçuk with day trips to Şirince and İzmir. See our [Ephesus tickets guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/ephesus-tickets-terrace-houses-from-selcuk-guide).

• **Mediterranean coast (Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye):** the warmest part of Turkey, with beach weather from May to October.

• **Istanbul:** milder than the interior, with damp winters and humid summers. In a Turkey trip, give it April, May, September or October; the detail, including a month-by-month table, is on our [best time to visit Istanbul](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-istanbul) page.

## Ramadan, bayrams and holidays in 2027

• **Ramadan 2027:** Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) calendar puts the first fast on about **8 February 2027**, with the month ending on 8 March. Sights stay open; some restaurants in conservative areas close in the daytime, and evenings are lively around iftar.

• **Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr):** about **9 to 11 March 2027**, with the eve on 8 March. Domestic travel spikes: book buses and flights ahead.

• **Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha):** in May 2027; check Diyanet's calendar for the exact days. It is the longest holiday of the year, and coastal resorts fill.

• **Other public holidays:** 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October (Republic Day).

Our [10-day Turkey itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/turkey-itinerary-10-days) and [our 33-day route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/turkey-itinerary-our-33-day-route-istanbul-cappadocia-pamukkale-ephesus) show how the regions fit together.

## Prices and crowds

Coastal prices peak in July and August and during both bayram holidays, when domestic tourists fill the resorts. Cappadocia's cave hotels are busiest from April to June and September to October, which are also the best weather months, so book these early. November to March is the cheapest time for the interior.

Domestic flights between Istanbul and Kayseri or Nevşehir are the quick link to Cappadocia: see [Istanbul to Cappadocia: flight vs night bus](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-to-cappadocia-flight-vs-night-bus-guide).

## When not to go, honestly

• **July and August inland and at the ancient sites:** midday heat at Ephesus and Pamukkale above 35°C is genuinely hard going.

• **December to February in Cappadocia** if the balloon flight is the point of the trip: grounded mornings come in runs.

• **Bayram weeks** if you are travelling by bus at short notice. Otherwise there is no bad month for a city-and-culture trip.

Diyanet's calendar puts it from about 8 February to 8 March 2027, with Ramazan Bayramı on about 9 to 11 March.

April to May and mid-September to October work for both: Istanbul is mild and Cappadocia has good balloon conditions without summer heat or winter snow.

### Is it too hot to visit Turkey in August?

On the coast and at Ephesus and Pamukkale it often reaches 35°C or more, so plan sights for early morning. Cappadocia is hot by day but cool at night.
