**The best time to visit Istanbul is April to May or September to October:** daytime highs of about 17 to 25°C (63 to 77°F), comfortable walking between Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar and the Bosphorus ferries, tulips in April, and shorter queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı than in July and August. The trade-off: summer is humid and crowded, winter is damp and grey but cheap. We spent 16 days in Istanbul over two visits: 12 to 27 October 2023 at the start of our Turkey trip, and a night on 13 November on the way out. For Cappadocia, Pamukkale and the coast, see [best time to visit Turkey](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-turkey).

## Quick answer by priority

• **Best weather:** May, June and September, highs about 21 to 26°C (70 to 79°F).

• **Fewest crowds with good weather:** April (outside Easter weeks) and October.

• **Cheapest:** January to early March, excluding New Year.

• **Festivals:** the Tulip Festival in April, the Istanbul Film Festival (April), and the music festivals in June and July.

• **Avoid if you can:** July and August if you dislike heat and humidity, and the bayram holiday weeks if you plan to leave the city by bus.

## Istanbul month by month

Typical long-term averages. Istanbul is milder than inland Turkey, but damp: winter brings rain on about half the days of each month.

• **January:** highs about 9 to 10°C (48 to 50°F), lows about 4°C (39°F), rain on roughly 16 days. Snow is possible but rarely settles for long. Cheapest month; indoor sights still work.

• **February:** similar to January. Ramadan begins around 8 February in 2027.

• **March:** highs about 12°C (54°F), still cool and wet. Ramazan Bayramı on about 9 to 11 March 2027 brings a domestic travel rush.

• **April:** highs about 16 to 17°C (61 to 63°F). The Tulip Festival runs through the month, with peak bloom usually in the first half at Emirgan Park and Gülhane Park. One of our two top picks.

• **May:** highs about 21°C (70°F). The best month for Bosphorus ferries and Princes' Islands trips before the heat.

• **June:** highs about 26°C (79°F), long evenings, rising crowds and prices.

• **July and August:** highs about 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F), humid nights around 21°C (70°F), little rain. Peak cruise and tour-group season: queues at Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern are longest.

• **September:** highs about 25°C (77°F), sea still warm, crowds easing. Excellent for a ferry trip up the Bosphorus.

• **October:** highs about 20°C (68°F), when we were here. Comfortable walking weather, though rain becomes more frequent by the end of the month. 29 October is Republic Day.

• **November:** highs about 15°C (59°F), wetter and darker. Good value.

• **December:** highs about 11 to 12°C (52 to 54°F), the wettest month. Busy and pricey around New Year's Eve. See our [Istanbul and Cappadocia in winter guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-cappadocia-in-winter-weather-snow-balloons-guide) for detail.

## How the season changes an Istanbul trip

In **spring and autumn**, plan outdoor time: the walk from Sultanahmet across the Galata Bridge to Galata Tower, the Kadıköy ferry, Balat and Fener's streets, and a Bosphorus cruise. Our [3 days in Istanbul](https://clevertourists.com/guides/3-days-in-istanbul) guide follows that route, and [where to stay in Istanbul](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-istanbul) compares Sultanahmet, Karaköy and Kadıköy.

In **summer**, start at opening time: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are free but queue heavily from mid-morning, and Topkapı's courtyards have little shade. Spend afternoons on the water or in the covered Grand Bazaar.

In **winter**, Istanbul is one of the easier winter cities in Europe: most of the big sights are indoors, and the cafés, hammams and meyhanes keep the evenings full. Bring a waterproof jacket and shoes with grip for wet cobbles. Our [what to wear guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-wear-in-istanbul-turkey) covers mosque dress rules year-round.

## Ramadan, holidays and events in 2027

• **Ramadan:** about **8 February to 8 March 2027**, per Diyanet's calendar. Mosques and sights stay open; the evenings around Sultanahmet Square are lively at iftar. Restaurants for tourists stay open in the daytime.

• **Ramazan Bayramı:** about **9 to 11 March 2027**. Istanbul empties somewhat as residents travel, but bus and flight prices rise.

• **Kurban Bayramı:** in May 2027; check Diyanet's calendar for exact dates.

• **Tulip Festival:** throughout April, with peak bloom usually in the first two weeks.

• **Public holidays:** 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October.

## Istanbul and Cappadocia

If you're combining the two, the best months are **April to May and mid-September to October**: mild in Istanbul, and the most reliable balloon season in Cappadocia without snow or summer heat. Cappadocia is much colder than Istanbul in winter, often below freezing at night. The route detail is in [best time to visit Turkey](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-turkey), [Istanbul to Cappadocia: flight vs night bus](https://clevertourists.com/resources/istanbul-to-cappadocia-flight-vs-night-bus-guide) and our [Istanbul and Cappadocia guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/istanbul-and-cappadocia). We went from Istanbul to Ankara for 4 days, then 5 days in Göreme.

## Prices, crowds, and when not to go

Hotel rates in Sultanahmet and Karaköy peak from June to August, in April and October weekends, and over New Year's Eve. January to early March is the cheapest stretch, often by a wide margin. Cruise ships add crowds to the old city on summer mornings regardless of the month.

The honest downsides: **July and August** are hot, humid and crowded, though not extreme by Mediterranean standards; **December and January** are wet and grey for long spells; and **bayram weeks** make getting out of the city harder. None of these make Istanbul a bad trip, just a different one.
