**Berat** is worth visiting, and the castle costs **300 lekë** (about €2.50 (≈ $2.8)) for adults, cash only, open **09:00 to 18:00**. The rest of the town — the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, the Gorica bridge, the riverside — is free to walk. It is **100 km south of Tirana**, roughly **2 to 2.5 hours** by furgon, which makes a day trip possible and two nights much better.

## The castle is a village, not a ruin

Berat Castle (*Kalaja*) is a walled hilltop neighbourhood where around a hundred families still live. That changes the visit: you are walking through people's streets, not a museum, and there are cafés, guesthouses and gardens inside the walls.

The 300 lekë ticket covers the citadel area. The **Onufri Iconographic Museum**, inside the Cathedral of St Mary, is a separate ticket of roughly another 300 lekë and is the single best thing to see up there — Onufri was a 16th-century icon painter whose deep red is famous enough to have a name.

Inside the walls, look for the **Holy Trinity Church** and the ruins of the **Red Mosque**, identifiable by its solitary minaret. The view down over the stacked white houses is the photograph everyone comes for.

The ticket gate is only staffed during opening hours. Because the castle is a living neighbourhood rather than a closed site, people walk in early and late without paying. That is a quirk, not a plan — go when it is open and pay.

## Mangalem, Gorica and the bridge

Berat's signature is two Ottoman quarters climbing opposite banks of the Osum river, with the white houses stacked so their many windows face each other — hence "the city of a thousand windows".

**Mangalem** is on the castle side, with the tightest lanes and the most photographed cascades of houses. **Gorica** is across the river, quieter, and gives you the mirror view back at Mangalem — which is the shot to take, from the far bank at dusk.

Cross on the **Gorica Bridge**, a stone Ottoman bridge rebuilt in the 1920s. Sunset from the Gorica side, looking back at Mangalem with the castle above, is the reason to still be out at that hour.

## Getting there from Tirana

**Furgon (minibus)** from Tirana's North/South bus terminal: departures roughly every 30 to 60 minutes, **400 to 500 lekë** each way, payable in cash on board, taking 2 to 2.5 hours. On arrival at Berat bus station you need a local city bus, about 30 lekë, to reach the centre.

**Guided day tour:** $25 to $90 per person depending on group size and inclusions. The advantage is door-to-door transport and a guide; the disadvantage is that you see Berat at noon with everyone else.

**Rental car:** the drive south is easy and scenic. Parking in the centre is fine; parking at the top by the castle is tight in season.

We spent four nights in Berat in October 2023, which is more than most people, and it was the right call — the town is at its best in the early morning and evening, when the day-trippers have gone.

## The hill, and how not to hate it

The walk up to the castle from the centre is steep, exposed, and paved with smooth medieval stone that is genuinely slick when wet. It takes 20 to 30 minutes and is the main physical effort of the visit.

Two options: take a taxi from the centre to the castle gate for about **300 to 400 lekë** and walk down, which is what most sensible people do; or walk up in the early morning or late afternoon when the heat is off.

Bring cash. Cards are increasingly accepted in Tirana but the castle booths, local transport and many small places in Berat still run on lekë.
