**The month decides it: Bali's dry season runs roughly April to October and most of Thailand's runs roughly November to February, so go to Bali in the northern summer and Thailand in the northern winter.** If the dates are fixed, pick Bali for one compact island with rice terraces, temples and a strong wellness and villa scene; pick Thailand for variety (a big city, a cooler mountain north, old capitals and many islands), more transport options and a slightly lower daily cost outside the beaches. We spent 18 days in Bali in May and June 2023 (Seminyak, Munduk, Ubud, Kintamani, Sidemen and Padangbai, with a day trip across to Mt. Ijen on Java) and about 6 weeks in Thailand in December 2022 and January 2023, from Bangkok through the north to Khao Sok and Ao Nang. Costs below are typical 2026 ranges, not what we spent.

## The verdict by traveller type

• **Travelling June to September:** Bali. It is the island's dry peak, while Thailand's west coast and north are in the rainy season.

• **Travelling December to February:** Thailand. It is Bali's wet season and Thailand's coolest, driest months on the Andaman side.

• **One-base holiday or honeymoon:** Bali. Everything is within a few hours' drive of Ubud, and a private-pool villa costs less than comparable stays in Phuket or Koh Samui.

• **Backpacking and variety:** Thailand. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and the islands are four different trips in one country.

• **Best beaches:** Thailand. Krabi, Koh Lanta and the Gulf islands beat south Bali's surf beaches for calm swimming; Bali's draw is inland.

• **Temples and living culture:** Bali, for its daily Hindu offerings and village ceremonies; Thailand for its Buddhist wats and the ruined capitals at Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.

## When to go: opposite seasons

Bali sits south of the equator. The dry season is roughly April or May to October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months. November to March is the wet season: heavy afternoon rain rather than all-day washouts, with lower prices. One fixed closure matters: Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, shuts the whole island including the airport for 24 hours each March. See [Nyepi 2027](https://clevertourists.com/resources/nyepi-2027-bali-date-airport-closure-travel-guide) and [best time to visit Bali](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-bali).

Most of Thailand is best from about November to February. March to May is very hot, and the north has burning-season smoke in March and April (see [Chiang Mai burning season](https://clevertourists.com/resources/chiang-mai-burning-season-2027-haze-travel-guide)). The exception is the Gulf of Thailand around Koh Samui, which is wettest roughly October to December and good in the middle of the year. Details: [best time to visit Thailand](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-thailand) and [Thailand in December and January](https://clevertourists.com/resources/thailand-in-december-january-weather-where-to-go).

So if you can only go in July, Bali or Thailand's Gulf islands both work; in January, Thailand's Andaman coast and north beat Bali.

## Cost, visas and fees

Our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country) puts Bali at roughly $30 to $60 a day on a budget and $80 to $160 mid-range, with Seminyak and Canggu at the top. Thailand runs about $30 to $50 on a budget and $60 to $120 mid-range, with the islands at the top. Inland Bali (Munduk, Sidemen) and northern Thailand (Lampang, Chiang Rai) are the cheap ends of each.

Bali's entry costs more. Most visitors pay a visa on arrival of 500,000 rupiah (about $30) for 30 days, extendable once, plus a separate one-off Bali tourist levy of 150,000 rupiah, paid through the official Love Bali portal or at the airport. Use only .go.id sites: see [the Bali e-VOA guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/indonesia-e-voa-online-bali-evisa-how-to-apply-guide), [the Bali tourist tax](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-tourist-tax-evoa-arrival-process-denpasar-airport-guide) and [the All Indonesia arrival card](https://clevertourists.com/resources/all-indonesia-arrival-card-how-to-fill-out-guide).

Thailand is free to enter for about 60 nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, but since 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days, down from 60. ## Getting around

Bali has almost no public transport that visitors use. You hire a driver for the day, use Grab or Gojek where allowed, or ride a scooter, which needs the right licence: see [Bali scooter rules](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-scooter-rental-rules-police-checkpoints-license-guide). Distances are short but roads are slow; Seminyak to Ubud can take over an hour in traffic.

Thailand has trains, cheap domestic flights, long-distance buses and ferries, plus metro lines in Bangkok. That is why a multi-stop route like ours (Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Sukhothai, Lampang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son) is easy to string together, and why Thailand suits a month better than Bali does. See [the Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper train](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bangkok-to-chiang-mai-sleeper-train-first-vs-second-class-guide).

## Beaches, temples and what you actually do

Bali's best days are inland: the rice terraces and ridge walks around [Ubud](https://clevertourists.com/guides/ubud), the lakes and waterfalls around Munduk, Mount Batur from Kintamani and the quiet valley at [Sidemen](https://clevertourists.com/guides/sidemen). Padangbai is the ferry port for Lombok and the Gili islands. Temples need a sarong; see [Bali temple etiquette](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-temple-etiquette-sarong-rules-and-sacred-customs).

Thailand's best days are spread out: Bangkok's Grand Palace and food, the ruins at [Sukhothai](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sukhothai-historical-park-tickets-bicycle-guide), [Chiang Mai](https://clevertourists.com/guides/chiang-mai)'s old city and [ethical elephant sanctuaries](https://clevertourists.com/resources/chiang-mai-ethical-elephant-sanctuary-how-to-choose-guide), the limestone lake at Khao Sok, and the islands off Krabi. For a pure beach holiday Thailand wins clearly.

## Food and health

Thai food is the bigger draw for most people, from Bangkok street stalls to northern khao soi: see [food in Thailand](https://clevertourists.com/guides/food-thailand). Bali's highlights are babi guling, lawar, sate lilit and nasi campur, plus a large café scene in Ubud and Canggu: see [what to eat in Bali](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-eat-in-bali).

Stomach trouble is a common complaint in Bali; drink bottled or filtered water and read [how to avoid Bali belly](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-belly-how-to-avoid-food-water-safety-guide). Safety overviews for both: [is Bali safe](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-bali-safe-to-visit) and [is Thailand safe](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-thailand-safe-to-visit).

## Doing both

Bangkok and Denpasar are linked by direct flights of roughly four and a half hours, so a combined trip is practical. The catch is the seasons: May, June, September and October are the months when neither is at its worst. For a single trip of 10 days, pick one; Bali fits 10 days well (see [how many days in Bali](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-bali) and our [18-day Bali route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bali-itinerary-our-18-day-route-seminyak-munduk-ubud-sidemen)), and Thailand fits two weeks (see [Thailand itinerary for 2 weeks](https://clevertourists.com/resources/thailand-itinerary-2-weeks)).
